aha! I remember the Sigma 24-135mm! I believe Cameta on eBay had a bunch of them a couple of years ago for some insanely cheap price ($100 or so.....) This was the same time when you could buy a new Sigma 70-200mm DG f/2.8 for $699 from Cameta.

Now where did I put that flux capacitor?

Good luck in your quest Will!

I just gotta say that the canon 24-105mm IS is a biiiig mama compared to the 24-90mm, and i would't say that it's much better optically either.

AF though... is another matter entirely....

Pentax still has one of the FA 28-105's in production.

The FA 28-90 mentioned actually delivers images with very nice pop. Due to it's cheap plastic construction the price of this lens used is well under $100. It could get you by while waiting for something else.

Unfortunately I missed Cameta's blowout on the Sigma 24-135. I had to pay double that for it from KEH, who rated it as EX but I would have rated it LN++.

I know what you mean about the 28-90, it's why I can't get rid of the lens. It has taken some of my nicest colour shots, images that really pop. I keep wondering if I could find another copy of the lens that didn't have soft corners.

The softness is not evenly distributed to the corners, it's much softer in the top right corner. Is that something that could be serviced?

I have both 24-90 and FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 and both are useful to me. The 24-90 is often better as a single walkaround lens as it offers the wider angle, already somewhat borderline on a D-SLR. The 28-105 on the other hand offers f/4 all the way to 70mm and is even smaller & lighter. This one can go nicely with a wider/shorter zoom like a FA 20-35 or DA 16-45. I have also been trying a F 35-135 f/3.5-4.5 in a similar role but it is considerably bulkier than the 28-105 and I don't care as much for the F-series style manual focus ring.

And yes, that C.24-105L/IS f/4 is nice, but a bit of a beast. Its intended role of course is on a full-frame SLR so the Pentax equivalent would be the upcoming DA 17-70 f/4 which will be much more compact. I sometimes wish my 24-90 was constant F4 but I fear that Pentax would have had to enlarge it considerably and ruin its (to me) practically perfect proportions. It's only 1/3 stop, anyway.

Andrew,

Comparing the 24-90 vs the 28-105, which lens has the better image quality in the midrange (you know, 60-75mm or thereabouts)?

And is the Pentax 28-105 the same as the Tamron version of the same lens, worse, or better?

Will
