For anyone that missed my tread here are a few images using the MTO 1000mm F10. I removed my first few images so you need to go down the thread a bit to see the newer images.

Thanks,

Ray

Ah mirrors... I'm thinking of getting a/some mirrors for a travel wildlife lens. Smaller than the 300/4, and with that "reach out and touch someone" length

Slightly OT here:

Last time when I serached eBay, i saw many 500mm mirror lens on sale. Majority of them are look alike having f8.0 aperature but with various brands such as:

Seikanon
Guantaray
Ricoh
Elicar
Kalimar
Sirius
Centon
Soligor
Pheonix

Just wonder if most of these lens were re-badged mirror lens from the same OEM.

I'm too new to mirror lenses to offer an opinion. Heres a site that has quite a bit of info and associated links. I suggest that anyone interested in such a lens do some research and then decide where to spend those hard earned $s. The Tamron that Ben has pictured is rated very highly. The Tokina gets good marks also. One of the newer lenses is made in Russia, Rubinar, i think and seem to be rated well but are in the $300 range from what i saw. i don't know what mount they use.

Ben thats a very sharp lens.

Ray, I liked your pics..... the tractor pic is excellent

Thanks for the link.

I have found one Pentax mirror lens 400-600mm f8-f12 on sale in eBay. It ended at $433 not meeting the reserve price. The Buy-It-Now price was $750.

Interestingly, this lens has dual focal lengths and was made by Pentax.

There are some "unusual" mirror lenses. The Rubinar does come in a Pentax mount. It appears that prices have gone up. Heres a link for them:

Pentax bayonet-K lenses; Lenses for Pentax K10D, K100D, K110D, *ist DL2, *ist DS2, *ist DL, *ist DS

A few forum members have purchased from them (i think it was the 85mm f2 jupiter 9).

This is not a dual focal length lens, it is a zoom lens. I would love to have one, but my LBA budget has gone for a bird for a while. For wildlife photography, this thing would be a marvel, as long as doughnut highlights don't bother you.

Did Vivitar ever rebrand this lens?
I have a Vivitar 500 f/8 and it looks identical to the Tamron/Tokina..
IF anyone wants it, its for sale. Saving for a DA*60-250 or something..

All I can say is if you want to buy a mirror lens, avoid the el-cheapo ones and stick with the reputable brands. Mirror lenses are pretty cheap to make but some measure of precision is needed in the design and assembly of the optics. There is nothing worse than to buy one where the focus and sharpness can vary.

My experience is practically nil with mirror lenses. From my searches, the best rated in the low end $ range for pentax use are the tamron, tokina and sigma. I found a contax mirotar (rated the best) for sale for $1200 (a little steep for my budget).

I'm finally getting some results from this lens. Not sure it will ever be better than this. very satisfying results.

Sigma made a 600mm f/8 and a 400mm f/5.6. I own the latter and am quite satisfied with the IQ, but it is a female dog to focus.

That Pentax 400-600mm goes for a whole lotta money when it pops up on eBay.
