Here, I put up an album of comparison shots between the 31mm, the 18-55mm, and the 40mm. These don't seem as bad as the ones I posted earlier, but, then again, I haven't had the time to look at them closely, and I didn't try anything at f/2.8. Again, these are all just JPEG conversions of the original RAW files, with no postprocessing at all.

No access to full size images on your flickr album.

Do you have a flickr pro account? If so, look in your profile options to allow full size images.

no.
DA40 is very sharp at F2.8; at F4~F8 it will be extremely sharp.
Just do some macro AF adjustment on it.

Yeah, I bought it used. I've never had the lens serviced-- I've had it for all of two days now.
Return it.

Crop to the maximum size allowed on Flickr for free users, 2000x something.

DA 40 is most definitely sharper than the kitlens at all apertures. I'd say at f/4 it will beat anything the kit lens can produce. Try adjusting the focus as someone said above.

Ah, I already sent it back. After I ran some more tests, I determined that it normally wouldn't focus right, but even when it was, there were still sharpness problems with the lens. Thanks for all your help, guys!
