Super Takumar 28mm f/3.5

I have just entered into the M42 foray.
I have a lot of learning yet to do though.

My first purchase was a Genuine Pentax M42 adaptor and a Super Takumar 28mm f/3.5

All shots have been taken wide open at f/3.5 ... now that I have figured out stop-down metering I am getting a little more used to it. But for the first day i found shooting in AV it metered f/3.5 perfectly.

Here's some test shots that aren't actually of lens boxes :P

My conclusion (as it was purchased off of eBay) is that it is much better than I was expecting. Colours are very rich and it is pretty sharp wide open.

I have yet to test it further at different aperture settings.

Focus ring is very smooth indeed.
For the money paid I am impressed indeed.
I also have an 85 f/1.9 and a 135 f/3.5 on the way from jsherman999 (I already know these lenses are good performers from previous shot on this forum).

So I will have more to play with.

You're gonna love the M42 lenses. I may go that route myself, but for now I hate having to go through all that bother of pressing an extra button. Sooo tiring.

Takes three days, then you wont need the green button anymore. I can pickup the camera and subconsiously put in the right values now. Didnt take long.

I've wanted one so bad... just been too cheap to get one.

Great photos, now I really want one, but I just spent my quarter's allowance on a TLR

I've never been able to understand why people think they have to push an extra button with M42 lenses. Set your mode to Av and eliminate that hassle.

The Takumar 28/3.5 is a very nice lens and works very well on digital bodies. Notice that it has hyperfocal markings on it and you'll find that it also makes a good street shooting or snap shooting lens.

Thanks for that Jay ... I can't wait for the 85 and 135 to arrive. I have been enjoying using it.

Mike ... i found AV works a treat for wide open ... and that's it ... if i want to stop it down though it's a different story (which after having a play isn't that hard really ... just use M ... set aperture ... get my focus close ... hit the green button (as mine is programmed for TV Shift to get the shutter speed matched) ... then get focus right and then fire.

I think though ... I may invest in a focussing screen though as when you stop down it can darken the viewfinder a bit. But that's another time for me.

But with this Super Tak 28 ... it's a really nice and sharp when wide open ... I doubt I'll stop it down much (unless outside on a really bright day).

One thing though ... I need to read up and understand the Hyperfocal markings ... I remember a post on it a while back and I kinda of understood it back then ... but i need to freshen up on it.

Going manual is still new to me ... but it's not as daunting as I first thought.

Love them 28mm Super-Takumars!

Simon, you'll get the hang of manual pretty quickly, I'm sure. The Super-Tak 28mm is a really wonderful lens out of doors. I prefer shooting mine at f/5.6, but it's quite good wide-open, as you say.

As for the hyperfocal markings, set your aperture, then look at the left and right hyperfocal distance markings for that aperture. Every distance between the two aperture markings will be acceptably sharp, with the sharpest point at about 1/3rd into the scene from the nearest hyperfocal distance. The smaller your aperture setting, the deeper the DOF; once the far hyperfocal marking touches infinity, you'll have "prefocused" the lens from the near hyperfocal distance to infinity. Handy for action shooting!

Thanks for the info on this Christine. That does ring a bell what you mention ... I have just had a look at it now and I understand what is going on now.

If i set my aperture at f/5.6 ... and get focus at 2m away ... I will have an infocus area of approximately 1.3 infront and 4-5 metres past the focal point .... I think that's right (just going on the markings on the lens.)

One thing I have noticed next to the 3.5 hyperfocal marking is an "R" ... any idea what that might be for????

Yeah, Simon, that red R is the offset needed for correct focus when shooting infra-red film (with an appropriate dark-red lens filter). IR wavelengths are shifted relative to visible light, and the optics focus them at a slightly different focal distance.

The red R shows the needed amount and direction of the IR correction!
