Down and dirty test of K 50mm F1.2

QuoteOriginally posted by steamloco76 Quote
I didn’t find one for under $200, but I DID find a very minty SMC K/M for $290. After shipping and Pennsylvania’s blasted tax on the whole transaction it will be $317. Hope I don’t regret it.
After sunset tonight I took my just received K 50mm F1.2 and K-3 out in the yard for a quick test of the lens low light close-up capabilities.
The first two photos were shot wide open at F1.2. The daylily is about a 50 percent crop. Levels adjusted.
Stone rabbit is full frame, levels adjusted. Then next at f2, the final daylily is at f 4 and a similar crop to the first image.

Many more trial and error adventures to follow with this ultra-fast glass.

By the way, the lens is in superb condition! Almost no internal dust, save one flake. (Always has to be one!)/

Picked up a Canon Eos Digital Rebel XT (350D) with a 50/1.8 on it. Unfortunately the lens is faulty, autofocus and focus confirmation are erratic, so I'll be selling it on for spares/repairs.

Picked up an Auto Chinon 1.4/55mm, M42 mount, yesterday. Unfortunately the iris doesn't work at all (it's wide open) and there is a little dust, though I don't think bad enough to affect results. The weather is dreadful today so I haven't tried it yet, but I'll be interested to see what the results are like, especially since I only paid £6 for it!

Ranked 50 to 55mm lens

Canon FL 55mm 1.2 - lovely bokeh, sharp in the center at 1.2, very sharp everywhere stopped down, color rendition is really nice

Pentax SMC DA 55mm 1.4 - practicality, can handle harsh sun and light rain better with generally good images

Helios 77m 50mm 1.8 - bokeh a restrained version of the 44m, sharp, nice color rendition
Mamiya-Sekor 55m 1.8 - very similar to the Helios, nicely crisp when stopped down, a little bluer color rendition than the 77m
Porst 55mm 1.2 - like the Canon but does everything slightly worse. I really should sell this lens
Pentax DA-50mm 1.8 - Nothing special about this lens although autofocus is a plus. Really similar to the Pentax 55mm but without WR I should sell this lens

Meyer-Gorlitz Domiplan 50mm 2.8 - Other people manage to get surreal results from this lens with extension tubes. I should give this lens away.

I concur in your remarks regarding the Canon-FL 55mm f 1.2. I have had this lens mechanically altered to K-mount, and it is one of my favorite fifties. Do you use yours on Pentax cameras?
