50mm lenses

I have 12 unique 50's* with no dupes; AOC, Pentax, Ricoh and Nikon. I also have 10 55's, but they are, with one exception, versions of the Tak 55/1.8 that came as body caps on cameras over the years. The exception is the K55/1.8.

I have in the past sold my M and A 50/1.4 copies and kept only the K50/1.4 and FA50/1.4.

* And the FA43 Limited.

I had one, FA50 f/1.4, my second prime after the DA35 f/2.4... Basically expensive for what it is, come without hood. It look to me the FA50 f/1.7 (or DA50 f/1.8) are much better choice, perform as well or better and less expensive from reports. On the K5, the AF was terrible while the lens is kind of soft. It need at least f/2.8, better f/4 to be really sharp. f/2 and bellow it is soft. My father FA50 f/1.7 a bit sharper I reckon.

I brought an FA77 and once I seen how much better it was, sold the FA50. I don't regret it one bit, and I am very happy with the 77.

So 0 50mm lenses and proud of it

Re the Itorex f40 50mm

I picked up one of these recently - they're designed with a removable internal stop for F40. Reviews told me that with it images are reasonably sharp, without it you get a fuzzy blur. But the one I got was missing the internal stop disc so I had to make my own. To do this I bought a packet of black game counters, flat discs about 1.3mm thick and 20mm diameter, and drilled my own. Since I'd bought a pack of 50 counters I thought I'd follow Lensbaby's example and made a series of them: f40, f22, f16, f11 and f8. I could see that the results were already a bit fuzzy at f8 so I didn't bother with anything bigger.

The bottom line is that the results are reasonably good for something that basic if you can hold the camera still at F40, still pretty good at F22 and F16, fairly soft at F11, and very soft with edges showing colour aberration at F8. It's better than a pinhole because exposures are much shorter, but that's really its only advantage. Not surprisingly, all of my other lenses give much better results.

At the moment I don't seem to own any other 50mm lenses, if I want a "standard" lens I generally go with 35mm or a small zoom.

Looks like this thread is slowly heading for zombie land. Is it because people don't like their 50ies?

My list isn't too long - or so I keep telling myself. In the order I got them:
- M50/1.7 - my first, and for a long time my only 50.
- A50/1.7 - got it to be able to shoot in A mode. Not anywhere as nicely built as the M.
- Helios 44-2 58/2 - everyone should have a Helios, right?
- FA43/1.9 - one of my favourite lenses ever - and the only one in this range I use regularly.
- DA50/1.8 - because it was there.
- Porst 55/1.2 - f/1.2 on a shoestring (or more like a bootlace).
- Super Tak 50/1.4 - a wonderful little lens, should use it more.
- CZ Planar T* 50/1.7 - beautiful build, love the colours.
- индустар (Industar) 50/3.5 - because it looks cool!
- Lensbaby DG 50/2 - a unique lens that can be great fun.
- K50/1.2 - the one I should have got in the first place instead of the Porst. Lesson learnt.

Ok, the list was a bit longer than I thought...

@savoche Nice list of 50's. You made me think about mine.
* = I bought the lens. The rest were body caps on cameras I've acquired over the years. I have sold numerous 50's when I accumulate so many that I need room for everything else - mostly M50/2's.

Here goes, from memory:

Takumar 1:2 f=58mm (Received today on an AP)
Auto-Tak 55/1.8 Zebra (with a K)
Super-Tak 55/1.8 - (3), I think (gifts in a box of broken Spotties)
Super-Tak 50/1.4 - (1) 8-element* and (2) 7-element (same box of broken Spotties)
S-M-C Tak 50/1.4* (The first lens I bought on eBay)
SMC Tak 55/1.8 (2) (with an ES and an ESll)
K50/1.4* (Original owner. Graduation gift in 1977)
K50/1.2*
K55/1.8 (5) (on K2's, KX'es and a K2DMD)
M50/2 (I think with a silver MX)
M50/1.7*
A50/2 (Gift with a P30t recently)
A50/1.7 (with silver K2)
A50/1.4*
A50/1.2* (silvered by dcshooter)
F50/1.7*
FA43/1.9*
FA50/1.4* (first AF lens, bought new w/ K10D)
FA50/2.8 Macro*
Rikenon 50/2 (came on a Sears KS2)
Yashica ML 50/2 (came on a Contax RX)
CZ Planar T* 50/1.4 C/Y*
NIKKOR 50/1.4 AI (NIB with a NIB FE2 at a house sale)

32. Yikes. I guess I ought to do something about that. Don't tell my wife.

and an SMC M 50 f4 Macro should be here next week from the UK....

funny how time flies...

since this post (8/15), I've since traded that M50/4 Macro and purchased two other 50's: a K55/2 and a Helios 44K-4...

I guess I'm not all that interesting in the 50-ish lengths, since most of my purchases since then have been 40mm and under.....

Actually, neither am I. At home I tend to have (some of) 15/21/43/70/100 in my bag; on vacation I usually have some of those and the 18-135 and 55-300 (if wildlife is involved) with me. And always the mighty GR.

And yet about a third of my lenses are around the 50mm mark. I suspect availability plays a major role.

Since I started this thread in 2014, it appears that I've expanded my collection too...

  • Yashica Auto Yashinon DS 50mm f1.4 - My first attempt at getting something faster than f1.7. As a DS lens, the pin needs to be blocked down or removed, but it is quite nice
  • Pentax K50 f4 Macro - still probably the sharpest 50mm I have
  • Pentax M50 f1.7 - I don't use it much, but it is such an engineering jewel
  • Pentax A50 f1.4 - My second f1.4 acquistion. Not a whole lot of difference between it and the A50 f1.7, but it is a bit more solid and probably means I can release the f1.7
  • Pentax A50 f1.7 - great lens, but replaced by the A50 f1.4
  • Pentax DA 50 f1.8 - very nice, and the only autofocus in the herd.
And on either side of 50mm I have:
  • Pentax DA 40XS f2.8 - a wonderful little lens I use a lot
  • Auto Chinon 45mm f2.8 - a fun little pancake manual lens
    and
  • Auto Mamiya / Sekor 55mm f1.4 - Another inexpensive attempt at getting to f1.4. As I note in my review, it's really good
  • Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 - a classic lens

I have the following,
FA 50/1.4 I found this worked well as a short portrait lens for APS-C
A 50/1.7
A 50/2
M 50/1.7
M 50/2
Pentacon 50/1.8
Leitz Wetzlar Summicron R 50/2 Leica film days, unbelievable lens
Super Takumar 50/1.4 x2 Nothing more to say other than what's already known, great lenses
Super Takumar 50/1.4- 8 element (newly acquired and cla'd) Love it
I am a Takumar fanatic and have a nice collection that I use on a regular basis for full frame and APS-C, nothing beats their quality and dependability for me.

I just bought a Carl Zeiss Tessar 50/2.8 in M42 mount. It might become my new "Favorite Fifty".
