Okay, who stole this 31mm?

I was searching completed eBay listings to determine the value of a K20d when I came across this listing:

Pentax K20D 14 6 MP Digital SLR Camera 1 18031mm Lens | eBay

A major FAIL for the seller for the wording of the title, but it worked out for some lucky buyer. I'm guessing the seller was not the original owner. I figure the camera is worth around $200, give or take, so they got the "-1:18031mm lens" for around $500. Not a bad deal! I wonder if it was somebody on here?

Not a bad deal as FA31 typically can be obtained from $600-$700 on ebay...

I've heard somebody on here make this claim before, and it surprised me when I first heard it, but it does not appear to be accurate as far as I can tell. I just checked the last ten 31mm's sold on eBay, starting from Sep 21, and the shipped prices were as follows:
$769.55
$800.00
$738.42
$878.00
$810.00
$928.00
$883.00
$923.80
$811.39
$858.99
That's an average of $840.12 shipped. Maybe it's true that you can pick one up for $600-$700 with some luck and some patience, but it looks like it's far from "typical".

It's a lens I've been curious about for a long time, so if it was easy to find a nice one in the $600's (and presumably a rough one for less), then I probably would have bought one already to try it out. But satisfying my curiosity is not worth spending $800-$900.

And I'm probably that one who got it for $800. xD with 3% ebay bucks its like $776 total. I just need more opportunities to practice with my new lens. =)

..or the $1,450 I paid for my new FA31 in 2009. Looking back on my records I didn't pay that much form my new Sigma 100-300mm f4 APO EX DG.

Hmmm...It might be a good thing I didn't know about that sale. I'm surprised to hear they dropped it that low. I wonder why they did it. Clearing out inventory? Feeling pressure from the Sigma 35mm 1.4? They threw another dart at the lens price board?

Maybe it's a sign that new d-fa 31,43 and 77 ltds (WR, DC focusing motor, diamond studded...) are coming next year along with the Pentax FF.

That'd be awesome, but I'd be happy with just a FF body.

I saw one go on Australian eBay last month for ~ AUD 650 (roughly USD 580 at the time), it was a clean looking copy from a seller I'd bought gear from previously. Doubt I'll see another go for that price anytime soon.

BTW, speaking of K20D's on eBay, here's another one that will probably make some people sick:

really? $715 for a K20D 18-55 and sigma 100-300mm f4 APO EX DG? - is this person completely daft? that lens is rather hard to find, especially in pentax mount.

I can't image how someone came across that lens legitimately if all they had was a 18-55 and a K20D, most people who have kit lenses usually go for the 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 slow as hell consumer lens option, the 100-300mm f/4 is a top of the line optic. That lens bought new, is worth more than a K20D and the 18-55mm combined.

I believe the 100-300mm debuted in the $1200 range in the US, but mostly sold closer to $1100. But for a while, perhaps shortly before, or shortly after, the 100-300mm was discontinued, I've heard it was sometimes available at clearance prices. So some original owners may have bought the lens new in the $800-$900 range.

And another thing that may happen is that when somebody is selling the 100-300mm f4 in Pentax-mount, they search eBay for current or completed sales of the lens, and usually only find Canon and Nikon versions, which can sell for $500-$600 due to much less demand on that system (no in-body shake-reduction, and many other excellent first-party telephoto options, etc). So they make the mistake of believing their Pentax version is worth no more than the Canon and Nikon versions. So unless they are involved in the online Pentax community, they could easily be unaware what their old lens is worth.

But I agree...it does some strange that somebody would own only the 18-55mm kit lens and the Sigma 100-300mm f4.
