manufacturing date of Pentax lenses

I wanted to post this over in the lens section, but they only do reviews over there. I just ordered the Pentax 16-50 2.8 in the big sale. I rented it this summer and really loved it. But there has been problems with the SDM motor. When I get the lens, will I be able to determine that the lens is freshly manufactured and hopefully will not have the SDM problems?

Just out of curiosity, how much and where you got it from?

If you buy from a reputable seller you're almost guaranteed to get new stock, as they move items quickly. The easiest way to tell what the date of manufacture is would be to look at the included paperwork. If there's mention of Ricoh, it's new enough

You can use the serial number database of this forum to have an idea. There are plenty of entries on the 16-50

Please send the url for the serial number database. I bought from Adorama for $996 plus 3 years drop and spillage insurance. BH Photo has it now for $100 cheaper without the insurance. I thought about cancelling my order with Adorama and buying from BH, but the insurance is worth about $100 and may be good to have for this lens with the history of SDM problems.

If your 16-50 says "Ricoh" anywhere then it's new stock.

I bought my 16-50 from B&H exactly one year ago. The box still mentioned Hoya. At the time, no one on PF confirmed buying a 16-50 with markings or paperwork that said Ricoh. Hoya may have manufactured a large lot of 16-50s before selling to Ricoh or maybe B&H had old stock. Regardless, my SDM showed signs of failure (AF would sometimes go to sleep until I moved quickshift) and was repaired under warranty.

Note that the 16-50 SDM problems are unconfirmed rumors. Those rumors include a high failure rate, and a Pentax representative at Photokina 2012 said SDM was redesigned. Pentax has never officially acknowledged that the problem has been fixed or that it even existed (the Photokina 2012 statement was from 1 worker bee and never confirmed by senior management).

Well just got the 16-50 2.8 in and the serial number is 9057064. Looks like it is a little older than some. This is supposed to be a US lens. How do you tell? There is no warranty card. There is a serial card, operating manual (all in English), a notification of change in company name, and a worldwide service network list. The list does show the new third party service center for US Pentax, Precision Camera in Ct. I guess I will go into the Ricoh site and register the camera. If it goes through, I guess I will be OK with the warranty?

I've never had to use the Warranty with a Pentax product but my understanding is the Sales Receipt is the most important part of your Warranty Claim, should you need to make one. I'd assume you could neglect to register the lens altogether, lose any other paper but show the sales receipt and perhaps shipping slip and have the warranty honored.

I just received (January 6, 2015) my 16-50 from B&H; the serial number starts with 904, and there is no mention of Ricoh anywhere. When I first tried the lens it wasn't autofocusing and appeared to be dead. I tried everything I could think of, then I put the camera into live view mode and it started magically working. I am not very confident about this. Anyone receive a newer serial from B&H, and would it be worth exchanging, hopefully for a newer copy?

I bought the lens from Adorama at the end of November and the serial number begins with 905. Paper work with the lens announces that Ricoh has bought Pentax. I would send lens back and get fresh lens. Lens works well in all modes. Slight noise from SDM lens but only noticeable in a very quite room. Smooth as silk! When you get it please announce the first digits of the serial number. Anyone have a 906 serial number?

If you check the list of serial numbers linked in my post #6 above you will see that some members bought 9049 serial numbers back in January 2012 and also a 905 back in June 2012.

I would think that the serial number would have some link to date of manufacture, unless possibly they are made in more than one location.
