Focal Length Usage Chart

I made this little chart to see what focal lengths I use and I discovered some interesting facts.

I use my 50mm a lot. That makes sense. Wonderful lens it is.

10-17 is all fisheye. I get some milage from it, too, considering that it is a specialty lens.

I use 18 quite a bit. Probably more often when I first started taking photos. This big bar makes me more interested in the DA 21 ltd. If I'm going to spend a lot of time at 18-ish, it might as well be with a prime.

I recently bought the 50-135. Too recent to make an impact on this graph.

The program, ExposurePlot, would be of interest to you. It is available as freeware at:

ExposurePlot (former Focalplot)

Great little program for showing one how they use their camera. Only "problem" is that it won't recognize DNG or PEF files. If I don't shoot RAW+, I always make a JPEG browse anyway.

The ExposurePlot software is a neat bit of kit, but I always shoot RAW exclusively, and I really don't want to spend my time converting 8 GB+ of RAW files for the statistic.

Although I AM getting very very curious...

I shoot only raw. I used the command line and iWork's Numbers to plot these, and a neat python utility.

ExifTool, reads pef
ExifTool by Phil Harvey

Then I did a command that was similar to this (paraphrased):
find /$PHOTODIR/ -name "*.PEF" -exec "exiftool {}" \; | grep "Focal Length" | split -f2 -d":" | sed "s/.0//" | sort -g | uniq -c > FocalLength.txt

Then I used Numbers to define ranges and plot a graph. It didn't take long and it was quite useful.

command line for the win! I can remember a saying my old C Programing professor in college said: "If it isn't case sensitive then it isn't a real operating system."

Keep in mind that his "day job" was a software engineer for Sun Microsystems....
