However the
local retail pricing for the 'Sports' version (DCW - AUD$2090 - RRP $2399) makes it about 60% more expensive than
the Tamron (DCW - AUD$1294). I hope the 'Contemporary' version will be more in line with the Tamron's pricing.
Those of us who own the Tamron are debating how much better the Sigma may be. Tough call, not just the money, but the weight differences are significant. The Sigma is enough heavier to give myself and others serious pause. Currently I can carry the lens attached to my camera and grip for about three miles, including multiple hoistings for about 600 shots of birds, BIFs included. Usually without monopod. Being able to do that with a 600mm optic is excellent.
I've done the same with a heavier 400mm about the weight of the Sigma, and while the results can be worthwhile, you feel it. Towards the end of the day, especially--and as everyone knows, the best shots happen just when you are leaving.
Since just about all lab testers are clueless about shooting birds or sports, I'll enjoy seeing results from shooters in the field. If interested I will rent, then purchase.
