Tamron 17-50mm Any one use this one?

Does anyone have this lens and have other pictures from it?

Flickr: Christopher of Definitive Images' Photostream

This guy says he takes 90% of his pictures from it and I was wondering if any pentax users love it as much as he does.

Hi there, i'm also keen to see what others make of this lens. I'm interested if it definitely (as I have heard either way) is available in SDM. It's size and weight (not to mention cost) and max aperture (2.8) also appeal. Too good to be true?

I'm pretty content with mine. I think it's sharp and offers great value. It would get more use if I could get the 77mm off the body
I think there's only one pic ("what is your address"), taken with it in my gallery.

shameless plug lol

Ack!, shameless plug indeed. . Looks good though (and the pictures too I might add). Is it SDM? Constant aperture? And 77mm? I thought the filter size was 67mm? Must be a story here....

Thanks .

It has a 67mm filter size, is constant F2.8, and NOT SDM. (The focus travel span is quite small, so unless hunting, its hardly slow in focusing).

By 77mm I was talking about the limited lens I love to use.

Ah, OK, yes I have a similar thing going on with the 40mm at present, it seems to be stuck... Thanks for the info, definitely going to have a look as I have the 16-45mm at present and for the size it is quite slow.

I had to buy 3 copies to get a good one, but the Tamron 17-50 is awesome when you get a good one! Just make sure you can return it if you don't like the copy you get. The first 2 were incredibly front focused.

What aspect of the lens are you concerned about?

So I had a look at the above lens, and on my *DS it certainly is not overwhelming in size. It is also a lot shorter than the 16-45mm and I notice (for me) handling wise it certainly makes the camera easier to hold steady. Indeed the focussing ring does have a very short travel.

In general, as I like small camera bodies this is an issue for me and this "fits" with the reasons that I would buy this lens, i.e. good value for money, sharp, compact, decent max apeture and quite a lot smaller than the * zooms.

@ksignorini - I haven't come across this problem in lenses before - it is just that the focussing accuracy is off? Beginner (at this issue) here - I'll have a read.

@ Ibam - The money is a concern for me, as is the fact I already have a perfectly good 16-45mm. So I'll ask the question - which one would you rather have? - the 16-45mm or tamron 17-50mm?

it's a tough call, but the Tamron has F2.8, and at the end of the day that's what divides these two lenses the most.
The Pentax is still a fantastic lens, and unless you have another wide angle lens, the 16mm is very handy. (I've compared it to the Tamron, and you CAN see the FOV difference).

It definately front focus's pretty bad, ive done some testing with it that can be seen here along with some other first impressions.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/20744-pentax-1...-50-2-8-a.html

Ive since tweaked the body focus on my K10 to correct it a little but couldnt get it perfect without throwing off my other lenses.

Colour and sharpness is great.

(Havent tested my theory out yet but...) About my comments of under exposure; it seems to underexpose in good light but then in worse light its gets the exposure right...this is on center weighted metering.
So im thinking it might get exposure more correct is i switch to spot metering outside.
Havnt checked that yet cos i only realised this just before i had to put her away for the day.

I can get it to vignet at any focal length (without hood) but its only noticable if i shoot a whiteish wall.

I'm kinda wondering if my experience with the lens is the same as everybodys.
Or is this what you would call a bad copy?

The vignetting is the only thing that worrys me but i havnt noticed it in real world shooting and it dissapears stopped down.

Either way i'm happy with it, heck I sacrificed my FA50 1.4 focusing for it so you know i must be.
