When it comes out landscape and indoor tight shot, the fisheye just excels (Holy City, Israel some of which were done in extreme low light at around F4 from Zenitar 16mm F2.8)

FE 10-17 mm fringes quite bad against sky. I have stopped using it against highlight background...

I find it much more than just a special effect thing. At 17 mm it is not a fisheye, but a well performing SLR 24 mm equivalent. At 10 mm you have to be careful not to include your own shoes. I find I use it much more than I had expected. It is great for street shooting and landscape. A it can be used to take people by the surprise, since they often wont understand that they are in the picture.
I agree with all of this except the "shoes" part. It is usually my left elbow :-).

I own the sigma 10-20mm and like it a lot. that said, the image quality of the pentax 12-24mm is slightly better and both apperar to have better IQ than the fisheye. if i was going with a large group and doing regular pics of them, i'd opt for the sigma just because it shoots WIDE. if it was group ocassionally, i'd opt for the 12-24mm.
