SMC Pentax-A 1:2 50mm works on and off

Good evening, something else. I tried using a SMC Pentax-A 1:2 50mm. At close distance it works, or so I thought, but then also not. This is on a K100D. I have set the focal distance on the menu prompt at 50mm. Through the viewfinder it shows the SR hand. but the shutter does not release. It did and then again no luck! Any help?
Thank you
Johann

Shutter will only release if the image is in focus. This is depending on settings in some cameras, not sure about k100d. Are you getting a focus confirm light or beep.

Try this:
  • AF off
  • Aperture ring on A position
You should also check to make sure that "Using aperture ring" is permitted on the custom settings menu (menu/C (custom settings)/Using aperture ring). While this setting does not affect your lens when it is on the A setting, it must be set to permitted if you want to use the aperture ring on it or any lens lacking the A-position. There is no reason to not permit that setting.

If you don't already have a copy, the camera manual is available for download from Ricoh Imaging at:

With my K10D I find getting focus confirmation lock very difficult with manual focus lenses. The gearing ratio on the helicoid on old lenses must be such that very tiny movements must be made. It takes a lot of miniscule back and forth turning of the focus ring but usually I can get lock. I have the AF button programmed to disable AF/confirmation and use it when I can't see to get a lock or don't have the time to mess around. Or I just switch the body to manual focus. When manually focusing my kit lens mode it doesn't seem to be as touchy and much easier to achieve confirmation lock.

Switching to manual focus mode allows you to release the shutter without focus confirmation lock.

Try carefully clean your ring faces (contacts) between both your lens and camera.
Hope this works.

Thank you all! AF to manual and aperture ring to "A" did the trick!
I had a K100d long ago, then10D, then Canons and now back to that old familiar shutter sound. With the 18-250 it works well for me.
