The DA 35mm limited is my favourite portrait lens.

Tons of good photos here that shows it can be used with great success. I have used it for portraits while traveling and was actually surprised how good the result was. It gives a very nice 3d feel when the subject is close and you can isolate it from the background. You do need to get close to get proper portraits! In general, that is my experience with the 35 ltd - it is good all round but it sings the best in close focus or near macro situations.
