Takumar FishEye 17mm/f4

Hi All,

I recently bought Fish Eye 17mm/F4 and i am really enjoying it.

One odd thing is when i mount it on my K-50 i need to select the focal length (as with any manual lens) and there is no 17. I am selecting 18 and shooting it.

Just wondering why there is no 17, i am pretty sure there was 35mm when i mounted on my K-50.

Thanks

Not all focal lengths are in the selection. I have no idea how they picked the numbers to include. They did seem to leave out some focal lengths that were used by Pentax lenses which seems odd.

I too find this really odd.

When confronted with that I have just chosen the nearest that seemed sensible. I doubt it is especially fussy.

I notice the K3 has a better range of values than the old K100DS. There is probably some internal resource associated with each fl they provide.

I set my K-3 to 18mm when using the 17mm f4 Takumar. I figure that's close enough. My guess is that they left out the focal lengths that hadn't been used in a long time.

Here's one... K-5/K17/4. I used 12mm as the FL... can't remember why, but it seems to work OK.

From about the same vantage point with a K-5/F28/2.8

Other examples can be found here....

K17/4.0 FE images are noted in the EXIF info as "K or M lens" and use 12.0 as the FL...

Thanks. The lens has a nice rendition.

If you turn off Shake Reduction it won't even ask for the focal length, at least the K-50 won't.

Agree... it's an excellent lens, but the K17's all manual operation makes it bit fiddly for my taste, so I've moved on.

Currently, my FE preference is the DA 10-17, as it offers great flexibility. At 10 it gets really fishy, then less so as it narrows to 17 where it becomes easily de-fished, plus AF, good color, small form-factor, etc... Lots of others seem to like it, too... When the look/setting calls for mostly distortion free ultra WA, the DA 12-24 (plus others) is hard to beat, as well.

Cheers... M

I don't mind MF on Fisheyes because the DoF is so big. My Samyang 8mm is a breeze to use and so wide I have to be careful of where I place my feet when shooting

Since the EXIF data will match whatever you enter, and SR at wide angle isn't as vital - I go with curious numbers so I'll know when I use a particular manual lens. With a fisheye it's pretty obvious when you see the image most of the time but it's still helpful for sorting and selecting off the computer. I use 15mm for my SMC 17 fisheye, since my 18-55 might be shot at 18 and with the fisheye the DA15 incentive is lessened. My lens is likely the same as yours optically but with the bayonet mount.

Thanks everyone for really useful info.

Another question what's the difference between this lens (17mm/f4 vs Pentax fish eye lense 10-17mm fisheye), apart from the fact that the leter is newest model with auto focus etc.

Is there any thing that i can't do with 17mm/f4 that i can do with 10-17mm fisheye. Sorry for asking this as we are comparing manual prime lens with a auto zoom lens.

How much can i pay for 10-17mm used in decent condition?

Thanks

A: Put it in your pocket.

They are really completely different lenses. The 17mm f/4 Fisheye will only appeal to those who want the manual everything experience. If you want manual focus only but auto-aperture there is always the Pentax-A 16/2.8 Fisheye.

The lowest I have seen for the 10-17 is about $350. My K17fe can focus really close, much closer than the F 17-28.. I'm not sure of min focus on 10-17 but for me that would make a difference. Fisheye closeups are very surreal
