DA 40mm XS & FA 43mm Ltd - Keep the 40mm?

I have both the DA 40mm XS and the FA 43mm. Having both seems redundant to me and I was thinking of adding it to my for sale posting. Is there any reason based on optics or IQ I would/should want to keep the 40mm? I'm looking for a sanity check in case I may be missing a potential use case or shooting scenario.

Thanks!

Useful check.

If the compact size of the 40 isn't of apparent use . . .

There's more than IQ to be considered.

Doesnt make much sense to keep it unles you have a K01 and Cargo pant pockets to pocket it.

I have a K-30 and a PZ-20 film body and I have no intention on getting a K-01.

Do yo ever see yourself favoring the 40mm over the 43mm?

I think the two are very different optical designs. DA 40mm is compact, has fairly even IQ across the frame, decent but "bland" bokeh, very sharp and contrasty, can be used for portraits, landscapes - a modern tessar lens. While the FA 43mm has faster aperture, has aperture ring, is made for film, has more "character" and very sharp image centre while the edges are not as spectacularly sharp. I think a lot of forum members keep both lenses, but it is for you to decide which one you need more, which one is redundant, or if maybe you use both, for different tasks.

My 43 is on its way in shipping. I'll have the same dilemma.

From what I've seen, the 40 is more useful when corner sharpness is neede. My guess is better flare performance too, but nothing to base that on.

Ha, I too have recently come into the same "dilemma", though I'm not currently considering actually selling the XS.

It makes my ZX-7 jacket pocketable, and almost my K-5II!

And I also have the M40/2.8...but it's so pretty!

Apples and oranges!

The DA40mm XS is a very very compact lens, excellent for non-obstrusive shooting.

The FA43mm is a FA ltd lens with a higher IQ, according to most review comments.

In your position, I would keep both, unless you are cash strapped.

If you are short in cash , the FA43mm will sell for a better price. If you want to retain the best IQ lens, sell the DA40mm XS.

My 5 cents...

Make the 40 XS into a keyring ornament to keep it on hand, "just in case." Also doubles as a mount shield!

I am having a similar dilemma. I have a few lenses that I am considering trading off. I really want to round out my 3 amigos with a nice black 77mm...

I have the 40mm Limited & the 43mm, the F28 & the 31mm, and the 70mm Limited & hopefully the 77mm... The 43 and the 40 are close in focal length but the images look somewhat different at the same aperture even to me. The 28 and the 31 are both fantastic lenses.

I am really struggling if I should keep em all and just save up to get the 77 or sell some stuff and keep my kit kind of smaller. I have toyed with the notion of selling the 40mm, the 28mm, and the 70mm and buy myself a 77mm....

Thinking "rationally" about it (haha, yeah right!), that move would leave you with a killer setup. I'm looking to add a 28-35mm myself. I love the 28mm fl on APSC, but the 35 Ltd definitely incites my lust, at half the price of the 31!

I keep dreaming of a DA28/2.8 Ltd, at the size of the 21/43/70 Ltds...

No kidding. A 28mm small limited would be awesome. The F28 though ain't too bad at all though. I LOVE that focal length and that F28 is pretty good.

At present I might just save up and get a 77mm. I got tapped out pretty bad over Christmas so right now I have to get my budget back on track.

Another factor for me is that I like to travel internationally. I haven't been international in 3 years so I am in record territory. But I am trying to get back out there. Travelling while really taking photos is going to be new turf for me. Normally I just find myself running around with one bag (at all) and that's it. Just a small back pack.

My travel style is fast, loose, and light so taking a whole ton of camera gear wouldn't work unless I was going somewhere where I can put things and have access. I have an 'everything in one bag' theory that I am trying to perfect (and it has to fit as a carry on). For my travel style even carrying a second bag seems like a hassle to keep track of. I guess it all depends on where you are going. Then you take into account you need a laptop and other things... ugh...

I have one friend who has so much stuff that when he went to Africa he bought a donkey (an actual donkey) and a cart to load up all his camera gear. I have gone all over the place with nothing but a point and shoot but then again I wasn't aimed at taking photos... I just took em when I could. To be honest photography will make me slow down a lot.

Right now if I was going to board a plane I would have the following kit: 15,21,31, 43, and 70 paired with a K3 and a Surui T X 025 travel tripod. Whether or not I would take a flash is undecided. I really don't know how to use the thing to be honest. Right now I am swapping back and forth between the 31 and 43mm all the time. I haven't touched most of the other lenses... but then I go out and put them on the camera and realize why I like the lenses so much....

Heck, even my Tamron 70-200...I put that on my K3 and now I am going 'this thing is awesome'... I had it listed for sale but I withdrew it...I shouldn't stress over such things but I do...

I have the DA 40 Limited and I struggle to find reasons to keep it. It hardly ever gets used and it's a size that just doesn't fit into my photography. The one thing going for it is it's small size. I can carry it anywhere so if I need an f/2.8 lens for low light shots. it's there. Problem is, I carry it everywhere but hardly ever use it anymore. Having 2 lenses in that size range wouldn't make much sense to me at all.

I carry the same...except 77 instead of 70 and also take a F*300 4.5......Turkey, Greek Islands and Thailand in 2014.

Any way.....I had. HD DA 40 then got. 43......eventually sold the 40.......i found the 43 was all I needed...... I keep a high quality CPL on hand and have put a DA40 lens hood on the lens.

In my view the 43 is sharp in all the appropiate ways......step it down for landscapes or group shots and it is sharp in the corners.....open it up for SDof and nice corners compliment the shot.
