I do love the 20-40. I am a fan boy of quality construction and metal. I actually am mainly a prime lens guy but WR is a big appeal to me.If those DA Limited Primes were WR's, I would probably have skipped the 20-40.

If you want really really wide, I'd consider the Sigma 8-16. That's a special lens, there's nothing like it. I'm considering getting one, once my budget settles down again, even though I have a 10-17 -they're very different.

The 55-300 is versatile and small enough you can carry it around on hikes. Everything is a compromise, but that one hits most of the marks. Plus, you can get it in WR format now.

I'd go with the 15 and 60-250* two great lenses. I know the 300 prime is a great lens but limited in use. The 60-250 has great IQ and versatility that the 300 does not have. Also might look at a 90 or 100 macro.

Agree with prior suggestion of 15 and 77. You'll love both.

You'll soon get bored with the DA15. Get the DA70 Ltd.
I have a DA15 on my wish list but have never used one, why would someone get bored, I don't want to waste money as that lens isn't cheap.

Judgment call, of course. He's saying that for him a wide angle runs its course...for you maybe a 70mm tele runs its course. That's all.

Have you shot a *300 very much? I don't know of many F/FA/DA*300 owners who'd call it "limited in use," because the % of interesting/compelling shots it turns out is very high. The DA*60-250 has obvious uses and benefits from its zoom range, but the aperture is slightly slower in practice (often must stop down slightly more for "near-optimal" IQ) - plus that's at wider angles of view, so it can't produce the kind of look and subject isolation (while still being quite sharp) that the *300s at f/4-f/5 can.

In fact, there are those of us who consider a lens with a fast aperture that has very good IQ at/near wide open to be just as versatile as a zoom (and maybe slightly more so).

Anything wrong with that Sounds like a high quality start setup.

If I would have known what I know now, I would have bought a K10D + FA31Ltd as a start setup when I switched to digital 6 years ago. Would have added a 55-300 a little later (I live in wildlife country) later and probably a UWA (prime or zoom) years and years later or never.

I sold a bunch of lenses (M, F, and DA included) as well as my Q kit to finally land a 20-40mm and 40 XS as the only lenses in my "collection".
