At more than twice the price of the Sigma/Tamron in Canada, it's not slightly more expensive! Anyway, I got it last week from a local shop. Hope it performs well, don't really have time to go out and shoot at the moment. I still hope that it performs in the same league as/or close to the Minolta AF APO G 100-400mm f/4.5-6.7. (You know, despite its narrow aperture, that Minolta lens is still a "G" lens; its IQ is also considered better than consumer-grade telephoto zoom lenses'.)

I paid $398.XX+GST at my local store. Anyway, they gave me a 20% discount on the filter, so the total price comes pretty close to/almost the same as that famous Canadian eBay store. And I did get a much better SMC Kenko digital filter compared to the cheap filter that is bundled with the lens from that eBay seller.

It sucks that Canadian buyers have to pay more than Americans for almost everything, when we earn less on average. Plus, higher taxes too.

Many things are much cheaper in Canada. Such as medicine at 40%less and we make it. If Obama is elected we will be in the same boat. You will remember the quality of the lens long after you forget the cost.

That's great news, davidd10. Don't forget the oblitary first pics.

Half the fun of getting something via UPS is monitoring it's tracking. Mine is sitting in Newark, NJ at the moment.

anne,

good thing you can check your status via ups. mine was shipped via us postal service and the tracking was not-so-informative.
i'm still hoping to get it today or tomorrow.

will post the obligatory 1st shots

55-300 impressions

finally got my 55-300. here's my initial impressions.
1. build quality - excellent
2. zoom - tight, no creep for now
3. AF - fast. however, the lens travel from closest focus to infinity seems a little long
4. AF noise - a little noisier than my 17-70 sigma

5. IQ. haven't played around much, but so far, so good. seems like 300 wide open is pretty good with some CA (green) (is this CA ?)

some quick sample shots. not sure how to link pictures.
if it's not visible, they're on my site at Zenfolio | Jordan Paw Image Arts

opiedog, congrats on it's arrival.

I'm assuming since you made no mention of any hunting problems, your's is a good copy. Nice set of pics too!

anne,

thanks.

with regards to the lens hunting,

if i point the 55-300 to a totally contrastless object, sure it will turn from end to end and won't focus but that's to be expected.

but for normal situations, i.e., objects with contrast, it focuses quickly.

btw, how do you attach pictures here ? do you need to upload them or can you simply link them?

regards
jordan
