It perfectly works on the A*200/4 macro. As greatly as with the 600/5,6,. I own both.

It works - I use this combo myself. The image is great, with no easily discerned quality loss! The Tamron works beautifully even with the 2x-L converter.

Thanks for the info Ben. I just purchase the 1.4X-L. I'm also waiting a like new 2X-S TC that I purchased monday. It seems I won't need more TC for a lot of time ! Both should be very useful with my Tamron 300/2.8. I guess the 1.4X-L will also fit with my Sigma 400/5.6 apo tele macro.

Thanks Ivoire for the link !

Marc is right. I purchased this lens (a different one, I'm sure) from KEH several years ago to use with my M400/5.6, but it wouldn't work due to the rear opening of the lens not being large enough to accommodate the protruding front element of the converter.
Same here. I use a 1.4X S rear converter. The problem is not recess, but diameter of the recess. The converter just won't go in.

David, good to see a forum member got the converter. I'd like to see the result with that sigma 400mm and the 1.4-l. used to own the sigma (very nice lens), but sold it to get the f*300mm. looks like i may settle for the kenko 1.5x as the 1.4x-s is not available.

just be aware, that it is a tight fit, as the diameter of the front element of the 1.4x-L is a little bit bigger than that of the 2x-L. Once you overcome your initial suspicion, that it won't slip through the Adaptall-PKA adapter and simply push it in (there is nothing there which could be damaged), you will get used to it. It is tight, but it doesn't even leave scratch marks or whatever on the tc. You only have to remember to dial in the new focal length into the manual SR menue, that pops up, when you switch on the camera.

It is an extremely versatile combination and after some getting used-too, I eventually managed to get sharp pictured even while handholding that massive piece of metal and glass...

I've been debating for about a week whether I should get the 1.4x-L on KEH, but I guess someone else bought it and made the decision for me.

I've used the 1.4x-S on my FA* 400mm for some moon photos and it worked great. I can't really imagine the 1.4x-L being that much sharper.

On my Pentax SMC-A 400 f5.6 the L-converters fit easily. The rear is wide enough and the rear element is recessed more than necessary.

Ben
Yes, works on the A, not the M. Here's the link to the owner's manual. It's a crummy PDF scan, but has the info we need. Page 2 has the compatibility chart.

The 1.4xL and 2xL TC work great w/ FA*200/2.8 lens too

Of course to play safe, better get the S versions. They should work w/ most if not all lenses.

If you want the original Pentax tcs, which in my personal opinion offer superior image quality, the S-versions should work nicely - but you loose AF. (The L-versions won't fit, from what I have seen of the DA 300).

If you want an AF-converter I would look for either the Tamron or Kenko 1.4 or 1.5x modells. There are no really good quality 2.0x tcs for Pentax available currently. But as Pentax has announced the new 2x SDM-converter, that would probably be a very good match to your DA 300.

regards
Ben

It's a 1,4x.

You're right - I still had old/outdated info on that. Thanks.

If the optics are fine, then you'll be hard pressed to see any difference. Just a very small softening - at 100%, and you must look at two of the same subject with/without the TC in place - not significant at all. It's one of their best TC's, although MF only.

FYI on compatibility, since you've got the F* 300/4.5 (from B& H website) - not sure if you saw this:

The Pentax SMC-A 1.4x L Rear Converter (also known as a tele-extender) is desigend (no proofreading on this one I guess... ) to fit on select Pentax 35mm "long" lenses.

<snip>

Note: Due to the high-quality design of this converter (5 elements/5 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses. Only the following lenses are compatible:

  • SMC-A* 300mm f/2.8(*)
  • SMC-A* 400mm f/2.8(*)
  • SMC-A 500mm f/4.5
  • SMC-F* 600mm f/4(*)
  • SMC-FA* 600mm f/4
  • SMC-A* 600mm f/5.6(*)
  • SMC-P 1000mm f/8
  • SMC-A 1200mm f/8
  • SMC-F* 250-600mm f/5.6
  • SMC-FA* 250-600mm f/5.6
  • SMC-P 400-600mm f/8-12
  • SMC-F* 250-600mm f/5.6
  • SMC-A Macro 200mm f/4
(*) Note: Fits, but better performance can be achieved with other versions.

Note that my FA* 300/2.8 is not listed, but it works just fine.

Cheers,
Marc
would this TC work with k400 f5.6? what is the diameter of the part that sticks out into the lens?

Front element is ~ 3.5cm in diameter, and sticks out ~ 2cm.

Interesting, except for the length of the extension, which is more than the sigma APO 1.4x and 2x TCs, the diameter is the same, 3.5co, That means it would also probably work on my sigma 70-200F2.8 and other sigma lenses intended for sigma TCs. Optically, who knows?
