da 15ltd, d fa 100 macro convince me to not do it

so i currently have a da 10-17 fisheye, but feel that i don't really use it much, so i could make some space by selling it. but do i replace it with a 15ltd? or do i just scrap the wide end entirely and just lean on my da*16-50 for that and get a d fa 100 macro?

if you had room for ONE lens, would you get the 15ltd or the 100 macro?

assume your other lenses are the da*16-50 and 50-135, 1.4 tc, plus the fa31 and fa77.

Clearly the macro, you don't need another wide if you have the 16-50. Not to mention, you don't have a macro capability yet.

I think it entirely depends on what kinds of pictures you would like to take.

Honestly, most of what I do revolves around portraits of cars/bikes and race track action and candids. Though i am hoping to broaden my horizons this year and get into having my gear with me more often and just shooting anything.

I feel like my current arrangement is pretty flexible, so a macro might make sense? Is the Pentax 100 the one to get? Or is the Tammy 90 or sigma 105 a better choice?

But then I see so many posts about how the 15 is staggeringly good. But I need to stop soon. I can't have both

This is one of those threads where you want someone to tell you what to do. We can't do that.

We're also not going to do research for you. There are a million reviews of the Pentax, Tamron, and Sigma out there - even comparisons. Two seconds of googling will tell you anything that we can tell you.

All the well known 90 or 105 macro lenses are very good: Pentax, Tamron, Sigma, etc

I've done all that. I understand that the question comes off as redundant, but in a personalized case I may get some good insight from someone who was in a similar situation to myself.

In almost every review you read the merits of each lens, typically written by a buyer who is justifying his purchase, but it's not as common to hear WHY someone chose the one they did. Maybe I'm hoping for insight that I'm not going to get. Who knows

The two lenses are so very different, so I would choose the one that I would need! 15mm for landscapes, 100mm for portraits, product photos, etc. OR you can choose the one that fits you personally better - some people are more telephoto, some are wide angle.
I have DFA 100mm and Samyang 14mm. I know the Samyang 14mm is not the same as DA 15mm ltd, but I think its a good, more affordable, alternative. Maybe the Samyang 16mm f2.0 would be good, too. But the Samyang lenses are MF, faster aperture, and much bigger heavier lenses. Though, of course the DA 15mm ltd is legendary for its character and is very compact. Just a different overall package.

Anyway, my thoughts condensed: - Which focal length is "better" depends on a) your goal, b) your character
- Neither lens will disappoint you, both deliver amazing quality
- I think the 100mm would be more versatile
- You can get some more affordable alternatives like Tamron 90mm macro or F/FA 100mm macro and Samyang 14mm f2.8 or 16mm f2.0, so you can get two similar focal lengths of nearly the same quality for a lower cost. If you buy used, you can maybe get both of these alternate lenses together for the same total cost as just a new DFA 100mm or new DA 15mm ltd

If your FA 77mm and 50-135mm lenses fill your telephoto needs, get the DA 15mm. DFA 100 if you want that 1:1 macro

Hello! One reason I haven't bought a 15mm yet is because too many times I've read that shooting one grows boring and I'm not that much of a wide-angle shooter to begin with. So I can't vouch for the 15mm but, I can't knock it either. I am however very fond of macro and the 100mm. I have the FA version.(focus limiter, aperture ring & no hood) My experience with it has been great and I do recommend getting it or the DFA100WR.(no aperture ring, no focus limiter, with weather resistance) I originally had a Vivitar "Plastic Fantastic." Trying macro with it is what made me decide to upgrade. Can't speak for Tammy or Sigma. Either way, macro is a fun area to explore.

I'm actually shocked nobody has said to buy both. That seems to be the way a lot of threads go on here.

I have both the DA15mm Ltd and DA10-17mm Fisheye. These are two very different lenses (apples and oranges). I have use for both. The DA15mm is great for wide angle incl. landscape. The DA10-17mm is great for tight indoor settings and fisheye effects. Generally i would say that I use more the DA15mm, but the DA10-17mm is one of these special lenses, that you need to have every so often.

Keep the DA10-17mm and go for both DA15mm Ltd and DFA100mm. They will add nicely to your lens lineup.

My 5 cents.

There it is!

Wasn't expecting votes to keep the 10-17. I feel like the most popular use for it would be for taking awful night club pictures. Though the effects can be neat.

What Im trying to avoid is building a lens empire. Might be worth selling the fisheye and just waiting a while to see if I feel like I'm missing something. Tune out the LBA so to speak. I'd probably also have to leave this site because the stupid classifieds are like crack.

That's what I'm planning on doing. But I'll probably opt for the cheaper Tamron 90 macro instead.

It doesn't matter how good a tool is, if it isn't the tool for the job you want to do then your money is wasted to buy it. Both lenses you're looking at are great tools but for completely different tasks; only you can decide which job you want to do; that will determine which tool you need.

The DA 15 is great for that.
