which lens??

I want to get a new lens and have nibbled down to two choices, but I will only buy one of them. They are both good lenses, but I would like to hear arguments for or against BOTH. Almost have the cash. Thanks to anyone with an opinion. Bob: I would either the Sigma 18-35 Art lens Or The Pentax 20-40mm wr??? What say you'se??

I have the DA 20-40 and really like it. It has better IQ than the 16-50 in its limited range and weighs half as much. I own the 16-50 also but do not like it as much for street and city shooting. The 20-40 fits the bill for me nicely. We travel some an I like the extra room in the bag also.

Apple and Orange.

You have there two very different lenses, with two different usages.

Sigma 18-35mm f1.8
Pros: Large aperture zoom - Very nice IQ
Cons: Heavy lens, non WR, focus issues on Pentax bodies (see expert review)

Pentax 20-40mm WR
Pros: Compact zoom - Nice IQ - WR
Cons: Smaller aperture

If you use the lens for travel, I would suggest the DA20-40mm over the Sigma. I travel a lot and I value highly compact and light lenses.

Hope that the comment may help.

Depending on your needs, I would rather have the 20-40 range than the 18-35 range and small form factor. If I need to add more lenses, that would be the one for me to get, of course, YMMV.

Except for focal length, I think you're deciding between apples and oranges.

The Sigma is a f/1.8 lens. The Pentax is WR. And consider the size difference.
I don't have experience with either, but f/1.8 would be the deciding factor for me.

Please read the reviews of both of these lenses. PentaxForums did a review of the DA 20-40mm ltd, and many users wrote reviews of the Sigima 18-35mm. The Sigma has issues with bokeh and more importantly AF, as users report. The DA 20-40mm is reliable, since it is Pentax. And WR.
Basically, the lenses are very very different from each other. Do you need fast aperture? Then the Sigma is for you. Does the lens need to be compact or WR? Then the Pentax is for you. I suggest you go to a store and handle at least one of these lenses.

Hi! I've alway kinda thought that a good pentax lens, on a good pentax camera, beat any other combinations. My gut feeling is to go with the 2.8 20-40mm Pentax. The only NON-PENTAX lens I own is a sigma 24-70, K-mount. It's not bad but nowhere near the class of my Pentax lenses. Although I would expect some partiallity for "pentax" on a pentax forum, I left canon for what I believe is a great $$$$ for $$$$ system value..PENTAX and I think that it's good to hear guys/gals here reccomend the limiteds by pentax.

The fact that the Sigma is an F 1.8 and a new "art" lens from sigma, is WHY I'm inviting aguments pro & con...They can both be had for the same money, so that is not the issue. The question is which is the sharper glass.

You could also get a used 21 and 40 Limited from the marketplace, and have change left over. A very small, hi IQ combo. Just sayin'.

The problem for me in Flushing< Michigan, is there is no-where to go in the state, to be able to handle (hands-on) any pentax lenses. I have bought almost every thing(pentax) sight-unseen, from Adorama or B&H. Thanks for your comments though, I'm very happy to get Pentaxian opinions.. BOB

I very recently bought a Pentax 77mm lens that is absolutely sublime. So I don't really need much convincing to go Pentax. Bob

I was seriously looking at some of the glass you mention recently.

Sigma out... too big and potential AF issues.

20-40mm looks great... but doesn't have pixie dust.... fulfils everything else though

It has to be the FA 31mm... no WR but lots of magic...

I normally would pick Pentax glass over Sigma - I like the rendering better. But the DA20-40 images have not excited me. Honestly, I think I'd rather have my old Sigma 20-40/2.8 back Sigma 20-40mm F2.8 EX DG Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database rather than the new DA20-40. But then I liked the FA20-35/4 over it.

So for me, in order of preference (best being first) I'd say:

FA20-35/4
Sigma 18-35/1.8
Sigma 20-40/2.8
DA20-40/2.8-4

In the end, I made myself choose between the FA20-35/4 and the FA20/2.8. I kept the FA20 (I also have the FA28/2.8). I later got the FA*24/2, and now I use it more than the other two. I have a DA*16-50/2.8 for when I need a zoom. It covers its range more than adequately for a zoom. If you mainly want the wide end I think the FA20 and DA21 are better choices. In fact, I actually think the FA*24 is the top choice within this range. I like its aperture speed, and I like its focal length the best.

Did you look at the user samples of the 20-40mm (around the web)... IMO the real world output sells the 20-40mm with 0 problems... I had always wanted the 31mm though

Yeah the 20-35mm is a good choice if you can find it.

This is my second go at the 20-40. The first time I just took pics of test charts. It was soft at the edges at 20mm. I sent the lens back and kept the 16-50 that I bought at the same time. A year later and BF pricing convinced me to try it again. No test charts this time. Just got off of a trip and really enjoyed using this lens. Sure my FA 31 is sharper but in reality and not peeping at 100% I cannot not tell that much difference. It also ,for me , takes the place of 3 primes for my travel kit in a much sleeker package than the 16-50. I like the 16-50 but do not really care to travel with it. My 3 lens travel kit is now the 12-24, 20-40 and the 55-300. For lighter I may buy the DA 15 again and use it instead of the 12-24mm.. If you try it, you might be surprised. I found that the narrow zoom made me look at the world differently than having a wider zoom like the 16-50. BUT, it is easier to deal with than just walking around with a prime on the camera. YMMV

I ended up not getting either of the two aforementioned lenses. I got the 1.4 rear extender and the Pentax 35mm MACRO. GOOD stuff!! Amazing, actually. Photoramone..
