I have both versions of the M 2.8, and they both perform admirably. I'm really not sure it was worth getting the one that is essentially an A lens without the contacts.

I have the Kiron 28/2 with an A setting. I probably use it most of all the manual focus 28mm because it has the A contacts and the fast aperture. Performance is quite good, Since getting the FA31, all the 28mm lenses are collecting more dust.

Hi

What alternatives around this focal length (A lens type) should be taken into account from third-party lenses?
there are a bunch of good 28mm legacy primes out there, it's a much more forgiving focal length than 24mm.

you really don't need to leave the pentax stable to find a good 28mm prime, tho, look at these resolution tests:

28mm is a nice FL on APS-C. You can pick up Pentax/Sigma 28mm f/2.8 A lenses pretty cheap - ~$30-$60

This is what I picked up for $30 at the Pasadena camera show.

I was looking for a fast 28mm lens, and went with the Kiron 28mm f/2 MC, and even due I use it rarely, but I can't part with it. it's sharp in the center from wide open! but the contrast is better from f/2.4
And you can find it in PKA mount too!

I'll let you know if I find any at the Pasadena show on Sunday.
There are a lot of 50mm and 28mm there, and one group has a list of all Pentax M42 (even a 300mm M42).
