K135 2.5 vs 3.5

Just a quick question. Is the 3.5 worth getting for a third the price over the 2.5? I probably won't shoot less than 3.5 anyhow so that's not much of an issue. Both lenses have good reviews in the database so I think I'd be ok. Just not sure if I'd be missing out on something more than the faster aperture. The price is significantly different so just makes me wonder a bit. Thanks

I have both and find the f2.5 significantly more interesting to use, but that's partly because it's such fun wide open. If money is no object I'd buy the f2.5 every time, it is one of the greats, and worth three times a "cheap" f3.5.

My experience is that most 135mm manual focus lenses are good performers. The K 135mm f3.5 is a more than adequate; sharp and colourful stopped down. But once you've used the f2.5 its hard to go back! Having said that, if size is an issue, you may want to go f3.5, or the even smaller M135mm. The f2.5 is larger/heavier and also needs a good deep hood, as shown below.

Rather than waffle on here are my flickr albums for the two lenses, if this helps

@utak: What aperture did you use for this shot: https://www.flickr.com/photos/95859572@N06/15251688209/in/set-72157647525540667

Don't know what prices you've been seeing, but here's a link to a 2.5 for about $235. The cheapest 3.5 I see in $116. I went 2.5 when I was looking.

Thanks utak, that was the info I was looking for. And your flickr confirmed the 2.5 is exactly what I was hoping it would be and the 3.5 is what I figured it'd be. Awesome shots btw. That FL is perfect for what I want to do and the character of the 2.5 is perfect.

Jrpower, I did not see that listing on eBay. I typed in pentax smc 135 2.5 and I seen one for $350. Mighty mike is selling a 3.5 for $90 so that's where I got my prices from. But thanks for that link. I emailed the seller to find out shipping cost to ohio and hopefully I'll be the new owner by next week.

You're welcome.

Embarrassingly I can't remember and didn't note it down at the time. But I can remember trying to max. out the starbursts and the octagons, so I think it was f16 or f22.

Probably because you typed in 2.5 and the seller used 2,5 (typical in Europe and South America). I rarely put hte aperture into my searches anymore to avoid this problem.

At these prices you can start looking at the F or FA135/2.8. Of course if you don't need AF there's little point, but I often do. It produces excellent images in its own right, and it's one of my favorite lenses. AF is quick on recent Pentax bodies.

Here are a couple of options, for example: https://www.keh.com/search/list?m=29&fl[]=135mm

I thought about the A first, and while both lenses have great reviews, it seems like the 2.5 has a certain "look" to it. Kind of get the feeling it's sorta special like the 15 ltd.

One thing I've noticed is that Adorama is pretty favorable in their pricing of "old" used lenses. Here's a link to a current listing for a 2.5:
Used Pentax 135 2.5 Smc Lens *58
They've also got the relatively rare, but well-regarded, K105 listed for a nice price as well.

At any rate, I've only started to use my K135 2.5, but as many have said, there's just a lot of character in those K-series lenses.

Is that for real? $120? I feel like I'm missing something here. And not sure what that *58 means. But man, I'll charge the credit card tonight heh.

I'm pretty sure that refers to the 58mm filter size of the K135 2.5. At any rate, happy hunting--I really dig mine, though it's a really different experience than the DA Limited's!. FWIW, I run mine with the round, screw-in hood that came with the Tak version of this lens (and not the original rectangular bayonet version)--that lets me use an Op-tech "hood hat" as a lens cap.

well, I almost always pickup 2.5 if I have to choose between both. 135/f3.5 is a nice lens but lacks character IMO.

You will like the K135/2.5, it’s a great lens.

I have both the K135’s and bought my K135/3.5 just after it came out in late 1975. It was my only telephoto lens for about 33 years and it’s a joy to use. However I bought a K135/2.5 back in 2009 that I found at a local camera store. The K135/2.5 is a much better lens, no contest between the two and I hardly ever use the K135/3.5 now.

Phil.
