These shots have really put the pressure on me to get the 300! This lens does well in closeups. You did a very good job with sharpness and exposure. Shooting in mid flight is always tough. Great job.
thanks

I'm stunned. Stunned by the sharpness, hand held huh? Wow, well done.

Excuse my stupidity, but the DA* 300mm is a fixed focal length of 300mm?

Not stupid at all - but your assumption is correct

I am desperate for a Pentax DA* zoom which goes to 300mm. The 250mm is a little on the short side for me.

NicholasN - yes, the DA* 300 is a prime lens of 300mm fixed focal length, and a maximum aperture of f/4

But don't confuse the focal length with the minimum focusing distance, for example - that is a different thing altogether.

In general - and of course there will always be exceptions - a prime lens will be better than a zoom lens, as all the components will be optimized for the single focal length. A zoom lens, on the other hand, will be, by definition, a bit of a compromise at all focal lengths. Although, some of today's zooms are VERY close in quality to some primes - the Pentax DA* 50-135mm for example - an outstanding zoom lens.

The DA* 300 is a specialist lens for those who want to do sports or wildlife photography, for example. It is not for everyone - each must determine their own needs. Of course, if you have LBA, like most in here..... you will want one regardless!
