Russian Limited's?

I've been pondering getting a Jupiter 9, mainly as a poor man's FA77. I also like the idea of the continuosly variable aperture. Not to mention its great bokah.

Then I started thinking, what lenses could I assemble that, as a group, could be considered the "Russian Limiteds". I decided to only include m42 mount, manual aperture, and cheap. By cheap, I mean under $200.00 CAD. And the lenses have to be either Russian, or old Soviet.

This is what I came up with:

FA31

MIR-IV 2.8/37 +6mm

FA43

Zenitar M 1.7/50 +7mm
Other options:
Helios 44-2 2.0/58 + 15mm
Helios 77 1.8/50 +7mm
Jupiter 3 50/1.5 +7 (only m39 mount?)

FA77

Jupiter 9 2.0/85 +8mm
Helios 40-2 1.5/85 +8mm (more then $200.00?)

Anyone have any comments? Anything I've missed? Has anyone actually done this? What do you think?

having russian primes would definetly be a novelty, i know i would enjoy having a collection myself, but really for patriotic reasons.

as far as quality goes they can most definetly hold their own against pentax's FA limited series.

My first Russian Prime (Helios 44-2) is coming in next week! I'm stoked. And when I hit up St. Petersburg I will be purchasing like a bandit

I'm really liking my Jupiter-9 a lot, it's one of those lenses that brings out the inner artist.

Good Call! I missed this one.

How could I have a trio of Russian limiteds and NOT include a pancake!

Maybe it belongs in the Russian DA limiteds list?

Now I understand why you cheered when the Russians won the gold in international hockey!

I have the Jupiter-9, Mir-1v, Industar-50, Helios-77M-4, Tair-3S but the one with the best bokeh and color is Jupiter-37A which is a 135mm lens. So make sure you include this one in your collection of russian primes.

Voe,

Thanks for the advice on the Jupiter-37A. I just might get one.

So far I have on order the Industar 50 pancake. Cost me $12.00 plus $18.00 shipping. I can see this getting expensive!

Here is my updated lens map:

FA 1.8/31 --> MIR-1B/1V 2.8/37 +6mm
FA1.9/43 --> HELIOS 77 1.8/50 +7mm
FA 1.8/77 --> HELIOS 40 1.5/85 + 8mm

DA 21 3.2/21 --> MIR-20M 3.5/20 -1mm
DA 35 2.8/32 --> INDUSTAR 6142 2.8/50 MACRO +15mm
DA 40 2.8/40 --> INDUSTAR 50-2 3.5/50 PANCAKE +15mm
DA 70 2.4/70 --> JUPITER 9 2.0/85 +15mm

I wonder if the MIR-20M should become a MIR-1B to keep the difference in the focal length similar to the others. Otherwise I have a 30mm jump where there should be only a 14mm increase. It seems to be more difficult to find lenses that are close to the DA series.

Wonder if you need a license to operate a Helios 40-2 on the front of a K1000?

the word blin is also very commonly used as a light swear to show dissatisfaction or frustration

similar to "ohh crap" or "damn it"

Voe, are you the one who posted those great shots with the Russian 135mm? I've been trying to remember who did that... Not to hijack the thread, but maybe you can post them again here, they were really pretty good and made me want that lens.

What about Mir-24M 35mm/f2.0?

I have read that it is a porr man's version of DA35. It is also relatively fast.

Right now, I can only find a Mir-24N (Nikon mount) costing $60 Buy-it-now in eBay. There is no Mir-24M (M42 mount) available at the moment.

Thanks for adding that one. It would be a better fit instead of the Industar 6142. Is it a macro?

That might be appropriate. The lens cost 12 bucks. I'm not actually expecting it to really match the DA40.

Don't know if the Mir-24M is a macro or not.
But its rendering is compared favorably against a Flektogon 35mm.
See the 3rd post in this page which shows two identical scenes to compare the Mir against the Flek.
