Sigma APO DG EX 2x TC

Anyone have any experience with this? I have the 1.4 and was thinking of buying this one to put on my 100-300 F4 to get me to 600mm. Would I be at F8 with this one?

I liked the Sigma 1.4x on my 70-200. The 2x not so much. It was not terrible but you could tell that quality was not as good.

Unfortunately, you will be - and that's wide open. Good luck getting auto focus to work as advertised, Jayman! :-(

With good light I had no problems.

I've gotten a 2x tc to work with my Sigma 150-500 at 500 and AF, but the IQ left something to be desired. It still worked both in good light with a high contrast target or the moon at night!

I use the 1.4x and 2x sigma TCs with my APO 70-200/2.8 EX (non DG non macro version) all the time.

I have found for most things the quality is excellent. I have even coupled the two together to get out to 560mm and been able to achieve auto focus lock, when you do this,my ou must put the 1.4 behind the 2x due to the protruding front elements, the 1.4 x is to thin to accept the 2x behind it.

My lens is an early sigma lens, from the end of the film era. I have seen reviews and reports that suggest newer versions, especially those with Macro in the lens name, get soft at longer focal lengths.

I can't say on the 100-300 how performance will be, other than to try, but I note you may not get AF confirmation with the lens being at F8 other than in extremely bright conditions.

I have the same lens and TC's and never thought to combine them. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just stick to my 1.4.

reached the IQ threshold

I used my 100-300mm f4 with a 2x tc but didn't like the results. The lens loses about 30% AF speed in nailing focus (but the 100-300 is plenty fast as it is) The 2x is meant to cater to the faster f2.8 lenses. The 1.4x was a better match in my experience

Sold my Sigma 2x as the autofocus with the 100-300 F4 was pretty poor - the 1.4x is much better (same effect with both the original K-5 and the K-3)

To keep within the f5.6 advice for AF, 2× is good for f2.8 lenses, 1.4x for f4 ones. All bets are off beyond that.

Anyway, for wildlife amongst foliage etc you'd MF to stop getting razor sharp images of twigs. :-)
