My experience is that 35 to 100 in flower shots isn't a huge gap. But most of the time that's due to my not trying for a "macro" shot of 1:1 or more. The close focus of the DA 15 does the kind of wild in your face flower with huge background thing I think you mean. I get that. The 35 to 100 doesn't seem big but I haven't got the DA 35 macro to try. If I pick up an extension ring I can do the comparision with my DA 35 f/2.4 and the F 100 f/2.8.

The difference to the 35mm will definitely be less extreme. I've used a 28mm on extension tubes, the perspective difference to the 100mm is still noticeable. Thanks for the offer, but I am hoping someone with the different current macros will volunteer. It's been asked a few times before and it would be nice to have comparative samples handy (if they already exist that would be nice too know too).

When is a lens too long in Macro? Can you clarify why the 35 is better for the things you use it for? I'm curious - this is the first time I have heard anything like this.
Taking pictures of botanicals hand held is much easier with a smaller lighter lens like the FS 35 Limited, very little camera shake. Also I can get up close easier. With the DFA 100 mm I find I need to step back more to get desired picture

To clarify why a 35mm macro could be better than a longer FL macro--consider you want to take a picture of not so small object (e.g., a 8"x11" page) from above---roughly m=0.1. With a longer FL lens you need to have a very tall tripod or get on a ladder--while w/ the shorter FL lens you can do it comfortably with a standard tripod.

In the field with larger flowers, plants, etc. that is one of the things you want to do. It is not the very small but the intermediate sizes (m=0.1 about) that are problematic with a longer FL lens. Of course you may not need a macro for this (many standard lenses will do m=0.1 or better)--but the macro generally is of higher quality and less distortion at m=0.1. Only you know what lenses you will take and what is of most interest. After all there is a reason (35mm film/FF) macro lenses commonly come in FL's from (about) 50 mm to 200 mm--and now 35 mm w/ cropped dslr.

Find attached the quick and dirty comparison of the DFA 100, DA 35 ltd, A 28 in reverse and just for fun the DA 18-135 DC.
Personally I was impressed by the little DA 35, but im usually not shooting flowers and such so the working distance (minimal focus distance) would just be to close for any bug, but wow...
All shot at f11 and closest distance with K3 on AV, ISO 200, tripod and self timer 2 sec.

its seems to be good glass... :-) the main impression is good. tried to take some pictures indoors as the weather was bad for outdoor macro work... nothing to share though
i really like that i can go from lets say 1:1 to 2:1 without any additional equipment. the lens is sharp and the working distance seems to be OK, better than 35 ldt worse than 100 WR & 28 reverse. i will need to get used to it. :-)
As it has no aperture lever i thought of playing around with a pocket light instead of a flash... did a quick trial with mounting the pocket light on the K-3 + Flash and it seemed to be reasonable for the apertures above F11 --> quite dark... have to try it on the K-5 with the Katzeye screen. Maybe it's slightly brighter?

venus.

The venus lens without the aperture lever will be a challenge when the aperture is stop down f11, f13 and smaller.
It operates on the same principle as reverse lens principle. shooting at wide aperture, the subject visibility is not an issue but as one stop down, viewfinder will be dim or dark. If only the lens manufacturer could add in the feature of PKA, this lens would have been a sell-out. It gives flexibility from 2X to 1X magnification and first for pentax mount without addition of accessories.

reverse a 28 mm lens will gives more than 2X magnification but stopping down to f11, f13, foucsing becomes challenging.
