In any case we all know how easy it is to take shitty pics regardless of your equipment! Sometimes they even have birds in the frames as well...
Some more fishy crap, from an osprey. DA*300 +1.4 converter, which has me satisfied enough that the big zoom does not seem like a great use of my cash.

Is DFA 150-450 overpriced? Or the Sigma 150-600 Sports compared to contemporary?

The build quality ain't the same for contemporary nor the level of optical corrections. Is it good enough? Sure.

Sigma S 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM review - Image resolution - LensTip.com

Sigma C 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM review - Image resolution - LensTip.com

They are not the same lens.

I would prefer a Pentax K-3 II with DFA 150-450 to a D500 with a 150-600 contemporary. I am sure it is comperarable, and good enough.

Also APS-C is good enough, as micro 4/3 when you use sensible apertures. In low light not as much though.

I don't have pics of birds "spitting from behind" and I was using (and still do) the Bigma 50-500 latest OS version for many years (which still is around $1300 new here). I can tell you that the DFA 150-450 is a great lens and it delivers even on older Pentax cameras like my beloved K-5IIs.

_RED1492 | Redpit | Flickr

That is what counts after all. I wanted a great zoom from Pentax with very good IQ - better than my Bigma and that is the DFA. If you want something cheaper there is always the DA 55-300 and the Bigma or the Sigma 150-500 you can find used quite cheap. Until Pentax gives us something new or Sigma-Tamron decide to support K-mount again these are your options.

Here is a more flattering shot of the Osprey, above in the morning light. Actually a frame or two away from the poop shot in the same burst.

What is very unusual about this birding photo (for me) is that it is not cropped and uses the full sensor of the K3. Most of the time I am shooting birds, it is not my K1 that I miss, but instead I'm wishing for a 20mp M43 or CX format to put some more pixels on a small space.

A panasonic FZ1000 has a 1 inch sensor and 800mm equivalent lens, and can out resolve a k-3 at 100 ISO (but not at 200 ISO0. I am sorely tempted.

no, it's 400mm

I can use my sigma 150-600 on Nikon 1 (own the J4 and J5). It's a lot of range (1620mm FFeq.), but very hard to use. I got good results with a Sigma 70-200 2.8, but not with the 600 yet.

No magic lens... at longer shooting distances, more focal length gets more sensitive to any vibration, 600mm on apsc is already getting tricky to get sharp images, needs a solid tripod.

That is why my favorite birding lens is the DA*300 + 1.4x. It is the longest I can reliably hand hold.

Amazon says 600mm equivalent. That would mean that at 14-15mp, the FZ-100 does not gain me anything over the 24mp K3 rig at 420mm (630 equiv).

I'm going with 400. I remember seeing the 400 and thinking as good "as my A-400 that's pretty good". Then I realized on my K-3, my A-400 is 600mm equivalent. What they call 400 would be like 275 for me, barely longer than my 60-250. But I'm still thinking of it as a possible dog walk camera. We miss a lot of good images on dog walks. But then the size comes into play. It's light, big and feels kind of feather like despite the huge chunk of lens on the front. Sometimes we fall on dog walks, when bush whacking. I seriously doubt it would survive the gentle bumps my Pentax equipment has been subjected to.

My confusion is leaving off the zero from the model number. The smaller sensor FZ100 is rated at 600mm equivalent. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Digital Camera DMC-FZ100K B&H Photo

On the Panasonic website, the FZ1000 appears to be discontinued, the FZ100 does not appear at all, and the current small sensor model is the FZ300, also 600mm max. Lumix Cameras and Camera Reviews - Panasonic US

I'm famous in my neighborhood for walking with the K3/DA*300 hanging from my shoulder. That is how I got the Osprey shot. My lighter version is the K5II with DAL 55-300.

Yes, they anounced FZ2000 and FZ2500 recently. Both with a 480mm eq. lens (with 4.5 at the long end). Canon offers 600mm eq. on a 1" camera (G3x, 5.6).

With good light conditions and for occasional tele shots, 1" can be an option, but never compete with a dslr an a good zoom lens.

Neither of those offers what I was saying I'd really like to have, which is my one of my current ~400mm (actual) lenses on a 1" or M 4/3 sensor. I'd really need an interchangeable lens body with an adapter. I'm not that worried about getting the rig much smaller. I'd just like to put some more pixels on a finch or hummingbird. I could do that with a Q, but that sensor is too small for my tastes.
