A*1200mm is a prime and *, but "only" has f8. Same for the A*600mm 5.6.
I think * are for fast lenses with use of special glas (ED, ...) and complex optical formula.
The 560mm is optical an easy design.

Pentax always has some exceptions to their lens designations. For example, the DA 35mm f2.4 seems like it should be an L lens based on the mount and lack of quick shift. A couple of lenses in the K series aren't auto-aperture. So they don't stick purely to rules.

I think a catch-all rule for the star lenses is "all the features were available to the designers and they put in everything that they thought this lens needed".
