whoa I didn't know that had a ring
It doesn't, sorry I wasn't clear. The lettering is mostly blue, though, which has never been seen before or after on a Pentax lens (or any other brand).

It looks good though.

It's so folk don't confuse them with Canon...

Sorry, Kerrowdown, Canon have started using green rings too.
Canon Professional Network - Coloured Rings

although according to Canon,
"These use a diffractive optic to produce a lens that is significantly smaller and lighter than other lenses with a similar focal length"

which sounds like they want to be Pentax lenses, so who is copying who?

Difractive Optic means Freznel lens. You know, those things stuck on the back windows of RVs so the driver can see out the rear window through his rearview mirror.

Pentax' red ring looks better than Canon's red ring, IMHO. :-)

Ugh.

Not necessarily, though in that case it might. "Diffractive optics" essentially means "an optical component that's not a mirror" so strictly speaking it's nothing new. So it's a buzzword that obviously has some meaning, but the name itself does not tell us what's under the hood. If you have definitive info, I'd be interested to read it.

I believe they mentioned that going forward lenses would have green rings, the red is gone. Speculation is that they read the horrified expressions of displeasure at the red color on Pentax Forums and felt they had to change.

Star lenses will retain gold rings. It seems, if this is true, the only red rings will be on the DA Limiteds and the 16-85.

Yeah I don't like the HD red, looks like Canon to me, but if you look at the roadmap, they have the new 2015 or later lenses denoted in red. Does that mean they will be red ? Or HD ? or will they change it to the actual ring color once they are released.
