Pentax Lenses Explained

I refer to this chart a lot and thought I would share it. Maybe it should be a sticky in the forum for all the newbies like me. Really good info.

The chart was made by the owners of this forum, it's very useful.

I have never seen this chart, it's perfect! I did not know that D FA lenses were fully compatible with current APS-C lensed cameras. I thought they were carry over lenses from the transition from FF film to digital. DUH!

A minor quirk of DA lenses is that some of the DA match DA-L more than DA. The 35mm DA f/2.4 fits this category, composite mount, no quick shift. Come to think of it do any DA 18-55 models have quick shift? I don't think my series 1 does.

Yes. Except the DAL version the rest has quick shift.

The chart is slightly inaccurate though (well, it's old). Some DA lenses are FF compatible, so it should read 'DA series/Full-Frame': varies.

I don't know which version of the 18-55 you have but my series one does not have quick shift. I also don't recall my 50-200 having it.

EDIT: I don't remember mine working that way but it has been too long since I had one in my hands and smart folks tell me I'm mistaken, so I apologize for my confusion.

I think what he meant to write was 'except for the DA L'.

Which I still say is not the case. Several DA lenses do not have quickshift even some that have metal mounts.

Every version of the 18-55, except the DA L and DA L WR, have quick shift.

The 18-250 and 18-270 do not have quick shift, but those are Tamron lenses. The DA 35/2.4 and DA 50/1.8 should have been called DA L, no quick shift and plastic mounts.

Every other DA and D FA lens has quick shift.

There is an error in terminology in that table. The heading "Auto-Aperture" is incorrect and should instead be "Allows Shutter Priority" (exposure mode on the camera body). All of the lens series in that column except M and K have the electrical contacts on body to allow the camera body to manipulate the iris (aperture), which may be necessary to achieve correct exposure if the photographer has chosen the shutter priority exposure mode on the camera body.

The term "auto-aperture" means that the lens iris is wide open during light-metering but is capable of automatically stopping down to the aperture chosen by the photographer or the auto exposure mode (aperture priority, hyper-program, or manual) upon tripping the shutter. All of the lens series in the column headed by "Auto-Aperture" have auto-aperture (as well as most of the SMC Takumar screw-mount lenses). Before auto-aperture was invented, the photographer would open the iris to the widest aperture, focus, then stop the lens down until the light-meter indicates correct exposure.
