Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6

Just purchased The Sigma 10-20 at the recent price reduction from B and H . The lens showed up at my door right before leaving on vacation so I threw it in my carry on and off I went . I am new to the ultra wide waters so I would like to know if the IQ is acceptable. Enclosed are some random untouched jpegs from my K-30. Any thoughts from other owners would be great . Thanks

They look good, although a few seem a tad under-exposed. Check out the Photozone tests for that lens - basically anything from f5.6 and above and you will be doing OK.

If you don't already have one, a circular polarizing filter is a good addition to that lens for many outdoor scenes.

Underexposed is ok for post. Just concerned about sharpness. CPL is my next purchase , it will fit my Tammy 70-200 also. I am new to ultra wide so I have to practice! Read concerns about quality issues on forum but this lens seems fine. Nice to have other opinions. Thanks.

Hi Jeff.
Enjoy the new Siggy.
I just found a Siggy 10-20 club on the forum.
Have a look and join in.

PS. I have had mine for a while but not given it the work it deserves: it can be a bit of a learning curve.
If you point it down at all, just make sure that your shoes are polished!

Not many of us are!
But there are a few who are really inspirational: When you have seen a few of Ken Goh's have a look at his stuff on Flickr!

I picked up one of these a few months ago and love it. I find the lens to be sharp. I like the rendering of clouds in particular in wide shy shots. Just be careful with CPL though or you can get uneven effects in blue sky.

They say the Siggy 8-16 is the one to get, but this is cheaper and I'm happy with mine.

I'm not sure a CPL is a good idea either when shooting with such a wide lens.
The pics look good to me, but you may want to check optimal settings for your lens. On mine, 10mm is softer than the 20mm end. Further, I get best results at the 10mm end at f8. As I zoom to 20mm, I actually get better results opening it up so that f5.6 at 20mm is best.

This is true. I messed up some recent shots not paying attention to that, particularly when shooting at 10mm.

While i don't typically suggest Ken Rockwell, his article on ultra wide lenses is pretty good and worth a read.

How to Use Ultra-Wide Lenses

sky gradient from the CPL is easy enough to fix if it's a clear-ish blue sky, and isn't as noticeable when it's cloudy. But do watch for it when you're using it outdoors, and remove it if you need to.

Stopping down at 10MM produces fairly good results. Wide open at 20MM . I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tip! Will a linear PL work on a K-30? I seem to have read on the forum that it would work on Pentax bodies.
Just asking because I already own a 77MM from my film gear days.
Very popular lens, glad I took the plunge.

I got this lens a few weeks ago and have come to love it for any place there are lots of angles. While I too am not worthy, I have posted some of my first experiments in the lens club and lens example threads as examples of what the lens can do, at least. 1 post got a "like"!
