I've added to the mayhem... again...

I purchased an SMC K 300mm f/4 lense, and while it isn't here yet, one of the common remarks is a lack of tripod collar...

any suggestions on one? I've read that a 65mm (or is it 72mm?) collar will work, but want to verify...

also in this purchase: an SMC M 50mm f4 macro lense... I could not pass up the prices on these two primes.....

Congrats on the new additions - the 50 macro is a superb lens, based on the images I've seen taken with it.
My most recent image taken with a prime - a Vivitar 19/3.8 (xposted to Vivitar thread):

that's a beaut, paul.... how do you like the 19mm? I am considering an ultra-wide prime... I have a Vivitar 24mm, but it is not a remarkable picture-taker....

in fact, I may be combining it with the Super Program camera I have for sale, just to move both of them...

I have to admit I shoot more zooms than primes, but there are times when a prime is indispensable. Here are a few with the DA 50 @1.8 on the K-01.

I was skeptical about this lens, but I got for $50 with my K3 bundle. I was pleasantly surprised and it a nice fit with the K -01.

agreed, Michael - the DA 50mm is an amazing lense for the price.... mine's called 'Sunday Morning' since it's so easy to shoot with...

speaking of 'Butter' - love the color rendition on this lense:

and wide open, close up shots are amazing with it:

OK - time for me to pick your brains:

I'm looking for a little longer focal length, and have decided against a teleconverter.. I'd rather have a good, long prime - pretty much since I have most lengths I use covered....

I'm shopping for 400mm manual primes, comparing Tokina (SD, RMC) vs Pentax SMC, etc...

any and all experiences are welcome...

also - why wouldn't I be interested in mirror lenses?
Tokina 400mm on my K3, no TC. This lens does not play well withTC.

A few things about the Tokina 400mm, it is not sharp at f5.6 around F8 things improve. I call it my purple monster. In real high contrast situations it can be unbearable. Most times it can be fixed in post but not always. It is a metal heavy lens with a minimum focusing distance of 13 feet. I have both the manual and autofocus versions. Optically they are identical, the autofocus version is heavier and has a hard stop focus.

Thanks! The Viv 19 is a pretty good lens, imo. Not as sharp, contrasty or as colorful as an SMC Pentax, but pretty decent. Mine is a Cosina-made version, with the A setting. My images with this lens always need a bit of extra PP to get them to look good. My copy tends to wash out/flare in bright light. I'm using a wide-angle metal hood, but I might try something a bit deeper to see if that helps. I use this lens a lot with my old *istD, and I usually dial in about -.7 EV to keep the skies from blowing out. The lens also has pretty prominent barrel distortion, which along with the other shortcomings, can be dealt with in post. It's a really useful focal length, so if you can find a good copy at a decent price, it's worth picking up. I paid about $50 for mine here on the marketplace.

Another shot, taken with the Vivitar 19 on an *ist D:

The K400mm f/5.6 works well with a Kenko 1.5x TC even handheld.

thank you Michael, Paul, and Steve.... I have a Vivitar Series 1 teleconverter (2x) that works well with some lenses (primes) and not so much with others (DA zooms).... I'll be looking forward to the K300 f4 and how it fares both with and without the TC....
