They probably render similarly, but the 1.4 will have the smoother/rounder bokeh. Nice looking shots so far, pepperberry.

Yes, those are the two that you just posted

That is the theory, of course, but what I am seeing is quite a difference in rendering as well.I'm realling liking the colors of the A 50 1.4, they are almost K-series like, but with stronger colors and more contrast.

at first blush, there is a significant difference between the two - the 1.7 is a strong performer, warm colors typical of Pentax lenses, while the 1.4 has even more of a 3-D pop to it; I noticed this difference while shooting my dogs in the back yard the other day...

granted, I've been more interested in the 1.4's abilities at the full f1.4 end, but when stopped down it's even more of a stunner....

I am hoping to be able to discern more of a difference between the two as the month progresses....

quick and dirty comparison..... sort of...

I loaded the two 50's in question onto my two bodies and headed out to the west field - this is completely subjective and unscientific as all get out (K-3 vs K-50) but all of these pairings use the same PP:

K-3/A50 1.7:

K-50/A50 1.4:

and when I got serious about shooting the sunset, the A50 1.7 does not disappoint:

so, aside from the obvious difference (aperture), the 1.7 holds its own quite well, but the 1.4 does seem to edge it a bit as far as crisp/pop/subject isolation (in my eye, anyways)...

Nice. That 55 is a good lens. I have the 1.8 version, but I tend to use my SMC Tak 55/1.8 more since I can shoot in Av. From a blustery evening in early May:

I have to say that of all my ~50mm lenses, that K55/2 is probably my favorite; I have not spent a month with the A50/1.4 yet, so we'll see....
