I really like both my DA 50 1.8 and my somewhat beaten up FA 50 2.8 macro, so with my KP if I am going for lightweight kit, the 1.8 may get mounted, but if I am looking for small critters and plants near the house, the Macro is going on. SInce the DA 50 was a freebie, it is going to stay with its older uncle.

" the niftiest of the fifty’s. " based on this review

" One factor that we did not take into our consideration is the dual purpose of the D FA 50mm F2.8. Since the D FA 50mm F2.8 can be used as both a 50mm and macro it would initially appear to be a better fifty. The D FA 50mm is as sharp as the DA 50mm F1.8 but it is 1.5 stops slower, has a slower autofocus speed, and costs twice as much "

and the longer focal length of the D FA 100mm macro F2.8 ( not WR) for macro

so I have no interest in the D FA 50 f 2.8 macro

it is a good lens I agree but better than the combination I use - that I don't know

I have or have had many 50mm lenses over the years. My standard 50 for years has been the FA 50 Macro. It is still one of the sharpest lenses I own. The DA 50 is an amazing little lens. However I have always found the images to be a bit harsh. I do not know how to really explain it. The images remind of photos that have been over sharpened with too much clarity. It still is indeed a nifty 50. Mine came with my K3 Now I mainly use my DA*55 which is only rivaled by the DA*50-135. All of the 50mm macros used the same optical formula, A50, F50, FA50, and DFA50. The downside to a macro is the larger size and longer focus throw. The DA*55 surprisingly has an extremely close minimum focus distance. I had the FA50 1.4 but found the images soft especially wide open so I ended with a DA*55.

For me the biggest difference between the FA50 macro and the DA 50 is the color rendering. The colors on the FA50 are more realistic and pleasing. However the FA50 macro is twice as heavy and big. But I still grab the FA 50 and leave the DA 50 home. The DA*55 is almost always in my bag especially with the K-1.

you prior comments (like this) prompted me to keep an eye out for an F/FA/D FA 50 macro and when the clearance sale came up last month on the NOS D FA 50, I could not resist...

FYI, one row in my lens storage cabinet has four lenses: FA 43, FA 31, FA 77, D FA 50. :>)
