I forgot to mention that I saved a lens from eBay hell: SMC 55mm f2; looks a little rough, but supposedly the glass is perfect... it'll be here tomorrow, so we'll see....

Agree - I have the nearly identical 55/1.8, and these are very nice lenses!

Another 28mm image, this time with a Super Tak 28/3.5:

This was done for the Single In challenge, Theme: Texture. It came out better than I expected; I'm quite please with it.

so much for that SMC 55mm lens:

this was advertised as having minimal dust inside, but clean otherwise.... hmm...

this ended up with a partial refund and I kept the lens - and I've bought another one, so we'll see how this goes this time...

so, it sounds like I may be searching for two lenses then, not just one...

one short prime, say 30 to 50 mm, and another prime, 80 to 135 mm...
Why stop at 2? Once you get started, you might as well go for 20

I started building my Pentax mount lens collection last September and I already have 4 - 50mm lenses, somehow they just show up. If you want a really sharp and inexpensive 50mm lens with great color and don't mind manual metering the Pentax M 50mm f1.7 is a real winner and easy to find.

Back in my film days, I used 17mm to 28mm range for landscapes (about 12mm to 18mm in APS-C), but that is personal preference. Probably a 24mm or 28mm would be a good place to start. 28mm vintage prime lenses seem to very abundant. But study the reviews, the Vivitar/Komine and Vivitar/Cosina options are very good and inexpensive and available in "A" versions (among others).

Also there are lots of 135mm options that are very good to great lenses. I have a Vivitar/Komine 135mm f2.8 that was cheap and quite good.

But all of these are MF lenses. Hope this is helpful.

Oops looks like I replied to an early part of this thread, hope I am not too redundant or going off in the wrong direction. (Of course rabbit trails and direction changes are the norm on these threads aren't they?)

I have had my k-50 for exactly 4 months as well, but I got excited and ordered some primes while it was still in the mail. Found some great deals on some old ones, but I take lots of out-of-focus pictures

I usually have a A-28mm f3.5 on the camera default. Portraits, I use M-50mm f1.4. Both I got for around $40, so I am pleased. It can be a pain in the ass to remember all the things to do to use them properly, so you might just go for like a 28mm or 35mm with autofocus, as I have a 135mm prime, but rarely use it, and the 50 is little long for walking around use as well, 28 would be my "walk around". My attempt to solve this issue, to have one lens that I can use for a variety of things, is 43mm L which comes in mail tommorrow. I would like to get a 70mm or 100mm with macro function, then between the two, I would have most bases covered. I have a 50mm f1.7, that is manual. I would let you have it if you like. Send me your address and I will mail it to you if you share pictures!!

I need to lay of the primes really, I have a zoom lens with 18-210 that is light and compact and AF, but the quality of the photo with the prime when done correctly does not compare, it is the correctly part that is hard. When using the older lens as a beginner it is just too easy to forget something needed to get the right shot, and even if you figure out the exposure, the manual focus is tough. Maybe my eyes just suck, I cannot tell a difference in focus between a large amount turning the knob, but later on computer screen it is quite apparent. So for that reason I suggest to spend extra money for more modern prime lens. I will give you a 50mm m-series to play with. I don't mind to take a bunch of useless photos, but when people ask you to take there picture, I wish I had automatic lens on, lol.

One of the best things about this forum is that I have learned that I am not the only one that has an LBA. Perhaps we should start a 12 step group for LBA. "Hi, my name is Rick and I have a lens buying addiction."

I'm not sure that's dust I'm seeing in there. Anyway, hope you have better luck with your new one. It's really a fine lens (I have the f/1.8 version), but I just don't use the 50mm focal length that much, except in Spring when blooms start popping up. I'll have to take mine for a spin one of these days...
