similar to how I feel about the D FA 50 Macro - the 1:1 macro ability is nice, but the lens is just an awesome 50mm lens without it...

Yes I agree, just an extra feature that can be handy every once in a while. My vintage Pentax macros and a couple macro lenses I had back in my film days were 1:2 max and that really was never a problem. I think the main problem with the closeness at 1:1 on the DA35 is trying to front light a subject or not shade it, you end up backing up and cropping anyway. And with digital that is not even a problem.

agreed - plus if I want to go macro, I'll pick up the Tamron 72B and get serious....

when I was considering whether I should invest in a macro lens, I read about how they all considered very sharp and that you could have problems with " range " with the shorter focal lengths.

so I bit on the SMC Pentax D FA 100mm F2.8 macro ( non WR ) and I am very happy with it.

if I ever decide to get the SMC Pentax-DA 35mm F2.8 Limited Macro it will because of the " limited " label not the macro

but then what do I do with my Kino Precision Japan Kiron 28mm F2 MC P/KA and SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS

And you chose well! I am finding the 100mm to be the "go to" for macro work. I do use my D FA 50 Macro a lot, but seldom for true macro work. I would love to have a longer macro (180, 200, etc.) but the price tags are way up there.

I originally was looking for a DA 40 Limited, but the used prices on the DA 35 Macros were awfully good (I got this one for around $200).

sounds like you made out well

I found my SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS sitting on a K 01 at Wolfe's Camera, decided I didn't want the camera but did talk them into selling me the lens

it is still the best in its class

unfortunately we have no funds to spend on any camera equipment at this time so it doesn't matter how cheap I might find a DA 35mm macro limited

zero, nada, nothing at all

priorities you know

thanks

I'm sure I'm not an outlier

plenty of people have priorities

and I have no room to complain

my current equipment does the job

Get a film body that can control the aperture, of course!
