Lousy weather here this morning, so stuck inside. Happy to be using the Tamron 72B and K 50 f4 Macro though.

K3 & DFA100wr

This is a heavily cropped image because 100mm was the longest lens I had that day.

K3+100wr still did a pretty good job capture those details but I wish I had a 300mm. Anyone want to recommend me a good (cheap) legacy 300 prime?

I really like my Pentax-M 400mm f 5.6, and it is not terribly expensive.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-M-400mm-F5.6-Lens.html

The M 300 is even better, though more expensive from what I can observe.

Both lenses are manual focus, but I have AF on other long lenses and seldom ever use it. For lots of these long shots you have the lens set all the way out to infinity anyway.

Good luck in your search.

I find the Tamron Ad 2 SP 54B 300mm f5.6, meets all my needs at this FL. I paid about £75 for one a couple of years ago, which included a tripod collar, which is desirable as the lens is quite heavy. It focuses pretty close too, so is good for chasing nervous bugs

depends upon what you mean by cheap and legacy....

I have an FA* 300/4.5 that I dearly love - when I bought it, I sold off my K300/4 and my A400/5.6....

that depends on what these terms: " good (cheap) " means

I suggest the op start by going up to the " Lenses " section above and looking at the reviews of the various 300mm primes from Pentax and third party manufacturers who
make ( made ) Pentax mounts

that would give you an idea on " good "

but how cheap is " cheap " to you or others ??

That is one I would suggest. Most of the ones in the market at present don't have the collar. I have a chance in next day or two to look at a 54B, so if I buy it then I will test it on Sunday, along with another prime that I will be looking at from same seller, M200mm/f4.

I have the SP 60-300mm zoom, and I think it's the sharpest 300mm in my kit, sharper than the Pentax 55-300mm PLM, but twice the weight. Macro is 1:1.55, which is pretty good, and you can keep far enough distance to not scare things. The zoom is a SP lens, so may be sharper than the Adaptall-2 300mm prime, and it is same max aperture at 300mm (unless you want to be really picky, then the zoom at 300mm is f5.4, the prime is f5.6)..

What did you think of the K300/4? I have been eyeing those, something that I may be able to afford. (An FA* or DA* 300 would be awesome, but not in the stars right now for me).

Another one to consider, albeit not a prime is a Sigma 70-300 DL Macro (https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-dl-macro.html). I bought one for $35 (US) and it really does a good job an does decent macro.

never really enjoyed the K300 - lots of color fringing, aberrations.. I liked the A400 much better...

I also have an old Tokina zoom (150-500mm) that I am intending to use this spring and figure out its value...
