Maybe I should watch for an Ultron but they seem very costly. Manual focusing experience is keeping me away from the FA 35 and 43.
Yes they are costly but worth it. The MX is a V good alternative to the ME Super. I used to own a FA 43mm (sold due to economic pressure years ago) and used it on my ME Super and Super A no problem, the manual focus is fine, as the lens is very well constructed. I would not worry about it being an AF lens, if you can find one at a good price. Other possible alternatives are:-
1. The original Ultron in M42 mount. Quite a bit cheaper than the SLII. Match it with something like a Fujica ST605/705 or M42 Chinon, for ultimate compactness
2. Olympus 40mm f2 and OM1 - will not be very cost effective though.
3. Minolta MD 45mm f2 and a X/XG/XD series body - relatively cheap but might need a service
I feel your pain here, I love the 40-45mm range FL on FF or film, and spent ages trying to find an alternative to the M40. I got lucky with the Ultron SL in M42, cost about 」250 rather than 」450 plus duties, for the SLII. I think you should save for either of the Voigtlander or the FA 43mm lenses, you would not regret the purchase.
