One of my old methods involves exposing for the sky about 15-20 degrees (give or take) away from the sun. Not at the sun, but a fairly bright area off to the side. Charlie, your method probably achieves basically the same thing.

if it's exceedingly bright, I'll go -3 EV.... but I normally shoot at -2/3 EV for everyday shots anyways....
