thank you - I've finally narrowed down the settings that seem to work with the K-3 and that lens - that's first of them that I've been truly happy/satisfied with....

Is a 35 mm lens that much of a different view than a 50 mm?
Yes, especially when taking into account the crop factor of the APS-C sensor.

Is an aperture of f1.8 that much more noticeable in low light than an f2.4?
Yes, however for a wider lens you can use a lower shutter speed (if the object is not moving).

Should I be looking only at autofocus lenses vs manual?
It depends. I only look for old lenses because of limited funds, but that's only my case.

I've read from end to end the thread on old manual lenses and how great they are - but is it really just the 'neat' factor of using an old lens vs a new 'plastic fantastic'?
To me, the beauty of these used old glass is that you can get high quality glass for a relatively inexpensive price. However bear in mind that these old glass will exhibit more problems including CA, flare etc. compared to the latest lenses optimized for digital sensors.
