The thing I always take into consideration is if the lens is too wide you can crop in. If it is not wide enough, then there isn't a darn thing you can do about it.
I would choose a slightly wider lens for your uses... but like others say when it comes to portraits don't go to wide.

Cheers

Randy.

I have been know to take several shots then stitch them together in a panorama. Lightroom is quite adept at producing seamless panoramas and I'm sure other packages have the same capability.

agree with both of you on the limits of primes vs workarounds...

I've got the Traveling Nifty Fifty in my hands for a couple more days - will be trying my hand at some panoramas with it; a good tripod is underrated for this type of work...

Amazing shot; nicely done. I rest my case.

so, here we go again, comparing lenses to satisfy my LBA...

35mm lenses - and the options are:

DA 35mm f2.4 (plastic fantastic)
FA 35mm f2
SMC A 35mm f2 or 2.8

and, of course, the DA 35mm f2.8 Limited - which is really not on the list because I'm too cheap to really consider one (yeah, I know, flame away), even second-hand...

so - experiences, opinions, etc.....

I have the DA 35mm f2.4 "Plastic Fantastic" and it is a fantastic lens. It produces sharp and beautifully rendered images at a bargain basement price. However, if I had it to do again I would like go for the 35 Macro Limited because of the macro capability and the "Quick Shift" focus feature. If you are absolutely ruling out the Limited then the Plastic Fantastic is really hard to beat.

agreed - the ONLY reason I am ruling out the Limited is simply the price.... and it is hard to pass up the sheer value of the "Plastic Fantastic"....

any other brands with a decent 35mm? I know the Sigma Art lenses are very nice... but fall into the category of 'nice, but pricey'....

For the price you really can not beat the DA 35 2.4. It renders beautifully sharp images and is lightweight and compact. I almost always have it in a camera bag. This was taken with the DA 35 on my K-01.

I have also looked at the 35 limited, but I do not use the 35 enough to justify it. The limiteds are in league of there own. Exceptional build quality, beautiful colors and the newer 35mm delivers an excellent bokeh due to its rounded aperture blades. If I was to get a limited I would go for the DA 40 limited. You can find the SMC version for around $200 and the HD version is $300 right now. I have no complaints with the plastic fantastic. For what I use it for it is just fine. I picked up a nice BW polarizer for it and the DA 50 1.8 on a B&H one day sale.

Why no M35/2 under consideration? I think it's my most used lens.

The M35 is a nice lens indeed. I have one and a lot other M series lenses. I think it is all about personal choices. I really no longer have the desire to do stop down metering and manual focus all the time. I already did that for years. The DA 35 seems to control aberrations better but that is just my opinion. For the same price as used you can get a lighter autofocus lens you can fully control with the camera.
