The Vivitar (Cosina) 24 2.8 (and its twin sister, the Tokina 24 2.8) is quite a stunner, now that I figured out the right hood for it...

Here with a little film emulations from RawTherapy/HaldClut.

CR, you're killing me with these Tok 24mm shots! I still have one in my B&H cart, but haven't pulled the trigger. I keep thinking my 28's can tide me over until I can get a ~20mm prime or 17-70-ish zoom.....decisions!

Yes, it's the same lens (the Cosina and the Tokina A version), I've held them side by side looking at every little detail... the barrel's a bit different, the lettering is different, but the size is identical, the performance is the same, and looking into the glass, the elements look exactly the same...

Everybody needs a 35mm lens (or equivalent) and this is nice, compact, sharp, what else do you need... oh and it matches beautifully with the CCD sensor

If you want to see what the lens looks like (and see how it looks just like the Cosina) the Tokina A version looks like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOKINA-24MM-1-2-8-CAMERA-LENS-FOR-PENTAX-/3821168089...4AAOSwBt5ZLEBq

The next wider good performer manual lens, I think, is the Tokina/Vivitar 17mm f/3.5, and that one will cost you a couple hundred dollars if you can find one. The Tamron 17 3.5 is also supposed to be a good lens but from what I've seen, the Tokina 17mm is even better than any 24 2.8 offerings.

Oh and when you get a zoom... why get a 17-70 when you can get a very affordable and excellent 16-45mm Pentax DA... quite possibly the best deal in photography I seriously love that lens. And sorry about the off-topic, this is the primes thread

one caution on the Tamron 17mm - if we are talking about the Adaptall-2 model - is the handling/ergonomics of the hood + lens cap arrangement is nothing short of a pain in the ass...

I have a copy of it that I simply haven't gotten around to listing for sale, especially since I've replaced that width with the DA14....

Interesting, I occasionally see the Vivitar version go by on ebay and the prices are good. I had a Tokina/Vivitar 17mm f/3.5 in Olympus mount and loved it back in the day, hope to land one in K mount.

A few years ago, those Tokina 17mm's were going for around $100 or so. No more

From a blustery evening at the lake in early May. SMC Tak 55/1.8:

OK - now that I've had my K-50 for about four months, I'm ready to continue learning and expanding what I can do with it.... so....

I need a prime lens... and I have questions...

I have spent the last two weeks, absorbing as much as I can about primes - reviews, comparisons, etc...

What i want a prime for: portraits, landscape and as a walking around lens...

Is a 35 mm lens that much of a different view than a 50 mm? Is an aperture of f1.8 that much more noticeable in low light than an f2.4? Should I be looking only at autofocus lenses vs manual?

I've read from end to end the thread on old manual lenses and how great they are - but is it really just the 'neat' factor of using an old lens vs a new 'plastic fantastic'?

guidance, advice and criticism... all welcomed.....
How about the FA 24mm f2?

thank you for the suggestion - had you noticed the date of that first post? it was well over 2 years ago and many primes have come this way - not an FA24/2, but a very nice K24/2.8, plus a dozen others....

Lol my bad, didn't see it. Yes a lot of new lenses have been released. But for fraction of the price, I think these old FA lenses would worthwhile investment. Not saying the new lenses are bad. People should totally buy them and support Pentax. But as far I have read these old ones are GEMS.
