several suggestions spring to mind, depending upon your inclination and budget - an A50/1.4 or even a Porst/Cosina 55/1.2 perhaps....

Thanks. The A50/1.4 is definitely a consideration. Someday I would like a 50/1.2 but there are other lenses on the list before I get there.

K-3 with Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM

when I started shopping for a premium, fast, AF 50mm lens, I knew that the new D FA* (the Fat Fifty) was not going to be anywhere near my self-imposed budget, so that left really only two lenses in consideration: the DA* 55/1.4 and the Sigma 50/1.4 EX DG...

the question about SDM reliability entered into the consideration, and while the DA* seems to be less likely to succumb to SDM failure, it is still a black-mark against the lens.... I don't think I've ever read an instance of HSM failure from any of the Sigma lenses...

I also knew that I would probably be buying used, mainly because new prices for DA* 55/1.4's were still beyond me, and there isn't another fast 50ish lens being manufactured by anyone else...

so I bought a Sigma 50/1.4 from the marketplace here....

just wow - it's my first HSM lens; I'm surprised by the speed and silence of it...

Great photos, great new lens acquisition. I have given up on boycotting SDM after using the two new Pentax 645 lenses, the D FA 55 and the D FA 90mm macro. No focussing noise, just quiet and quick, so much so that when I first started using them I thought the lenses were not focussing, except they were in focus! Hope the SDM lasts and does not cost big bucks for repair.
