Medium format prime portraiture

Couple of test shots using 645Z with specialized prime lens Pentax 645 135mm f 4.0 LS (lens shutter). Comments invited, but gentleness appreciated since this is my first effort using LS lenses.

SETTINGS: 1/250 sec. on LS lens, 1/4 sec. on in-camera shutter, f 8.0, ISO 100, flash set at minimum (1/16) level.

I'm not familiar w LS lenses (I know it stands for leaf shutter) - the portrait is lovely. 2nd one seems to have gotten better focus that on the first one... My question is, is the LS feature for low light and/or flash only? It is tough to get good shoots in low light, especially when using a lens for the first time like you mention.

When shooting outside in bright light, it is difficult to achieve subject isolation because of excess light in the background. You can use a fill flash, but shutter speed is limited when using an in-camera shutter with a flash unit. However, the LS lens with shutter permits shutter-flash coordination at much higher shutter speeds, up to 1/500 sec. on all four of the Pentax LS lenses. Ergo, the fast shutter speed and on-camera flash yields good subject isolation with a dark background. You ask if the LS lens is good for low-light only. Actually, the opposite tends to be the case--the LS lens is good for overly bright areas since it allows much higher shutter speeds. All this being said, I am still very much a novice with LS lenses, and I am sure there are many forum members who can add quite a lot more to the discussion on uses of these lenses.

Nice, thank you for this info - I honestly just learned of this after your post, so yes, I know nothing!

I am also glad that you did not take my initial comment the wrong way... reading tends to get interpreted in many different ways, and I believe you read it as I intended.

One of these days I'll venture into medium format... gotta do FF digital first, and that is also long ways to go for me.

Most welcome. Pentax Forum is a great place for folks to share information with each other. It is easy to know certain things very well, and be totally inexperienced in many other things. I occasionally see impolite reactions from certain folks, but not very often at all. There are no LS lenses available for K-mount cameras so far as I am aware, at least none of the Pentax brand, although I have adapted both of the 645 LS lenses to work, not always very reliably. Good luck to you.
