They are a lovely perennial wildflower of moist midwestern prairies and more easterly meadows, blooming in the early summer. The ones in my picture are this species:
Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis)
Pepperberry's might be the same, or another similar-looking species also found in the region.
I collected the seed for mine in a somewhat disturbed vacant lot at the edge of a town, rather than from a natural area. It is a bit of a challenge, since the seed pods, when ripe are sort of explosive. When you touch them, they tend to shatter sending the seeds flying a few feet away in every direction! I scattered a lot more of the seeds than I actually caught in my hand.
