there's a rumour of a D FA 100 Macro WR heading my way.... which may solve my interest/craving for the Sigma 105 Macro...

I do not mind 135mm on crop sensors as it is very similar to 200mm on film or FF. Never did like it though on film. It was always a compromise FL going back to the days when things were more expensive and people did not earn as much. You could not afford a 85 or 100mm AND a 200mm (which is what you really wanted), so you settled for a 135mm instead. In fact you could not afford either a 85 or 100mm only! They have always been way more expensive than 135mm's!
I totally agree about 135mm on film, Richard. I had one for my ME Super, a Takumar M42 with adapter. I sold it for the first 80-200mm zoom I could afford (from memory a Focal that I later sold to buy a Tamron SP 70-210mm 52A), since 135mm just wasn't enough to give an incisive view. And of course I always used the zoom at 200mm. I was given a Tamron 90mm macro (52B) that served as my high-resolution sharp tele - that was a great gift that I would never have been able to afford for myself, and I still use it.

On crop sensor I have enjoyed three 135s: the M135mm/f3.5, a Vivitar 135mm/f2.8 and a Tamron 135mm/f2.5. The Vivi is the sharpest up close, the Tamron the best at far distances and the Pentax-M is so small and light that I can take it anywhere (it struggles more with red saturation that the other two). So I now have three 135mm keepers, all green-button MF lenses.

Yes, at the time I had a 52A and a 52B, and the 52B was the "awesome" special lens. These days I still have that 52B and a 52BB, additionally I recently acquired an Adaptall 2x teleconverter and the Adaptall-matched extension tube (that was optional with the 52BB when it was released).

There's competition on my shelf now around the 100mm focal length - 52B, 52BB, Sigma EX DG macro 105mm, Pentax A-100mm/f2.8. All great lenses optically and ergonomically, only the Sigma is 1:1 macro and is autofocus.

I sold the 52A because it was too heavy for the ME Super, although well balanced on the LX. I bought a Tokina 80-200mm that was quite good, sold it later for a Tokina 35-200mm, but I never lost my desire for a M200mm - I bought one just last year.

yeah - I've kept an eye out for the last model of the 105 macro for awhile and they are hen's teeth, it seems...

I can find the EX (non-DG) model, but not the DG, which is what I really wanted.... and I've learned that if it's not the lens you want, don't buy it as a filler....

so the 100 macro will be here in a week or so and we'll see...
