I think I would try converting some of those cross-processed expired film shots to black-and-white to see what they would look like then. I wonder if some of them would look like early Tri-X pushed to a pronounced graininess?

Kiron 105/2.8 Macro with Lens-less tele-converter

Took a page off @Aaron28 book - got my K mount Focal x2 converter and took the elements off so I can use the converter as an extension tube.

This was at 1:1 - with the "extension tube" I think I am getting 1.5:1 - I do not think it is 2:1... I do note that I lost 1 step of light (I did a shot w/o the converter at regular 1:1 with same subject and camera settings - I had to add 1.0 exposure in PP to the shot with the extension tube to reach the same exposure and histogram as the regular 1:1 shot.

Today I plan on taking a few more of these with other subjects (hopefully more interesting subjects) and will hopefully upload both the extension tube and regular shots together for comparison's sake.

You could try it with the scans you have. Might give you some idea whether it would be worth paying for those HD scans the next time.

prior to exposing for the film better and getting no color and very faint negatives monochrome was the only way to go......did get quite a few that actually became something versus nothing...these had been posted before yashica C....yashinon 80/f3.5
