$305 is a great deal for a Vivitar 105mm f/2.5. I got one for $375 shipped from Yung here in the forums (great seller), but they can easily go for $450. I have not done too much with it since it's so much heavier than my Cosina 100mm f/3.5 and I generally wouldn't miss the stop. Soon I will make it work for me.

Back Yard Fly

Here's a Vivitar Series 1 105mm attempt from yesterday. I think it's a bit overexposed. Perhaps a polarising filter would help with the reflections. Any other advice appreciated. Shot hand-held but I have a monopod awaiting my holidays in Dorset -- will have it in a week.

ISO 200 f/4 1/500s. Needed to be pretty fast shutter as the fly was moving around. Shots where I stopped down are not as sharp.

Most of my macro, I use f8, f11 and above. Often with flashlights 540 fgz, powerful enough and shutter speed at least 1/80 n above to freeze subject, often wind or moving insects. AT f4, the DOF is very shallow. At f8 and 11, it is slightly better. Without flash at f8, f11,narrow aperture, the shutter speed will be slower and often result in blur images. at f8, f11 and above with flash gun, you are able to use a higher shutter speed to freeze the subject and prevent outof focus due to camera shake.

Try aiming on the eye of the insect as point of focus.

anyway, just try and try. Thats what I am doing..... learning....

I was also watching that one as it is exactly the same as mine.
I got it off Ebay along with a old Ricoh camera, a 50mm lens, 28mm, 70-210mm, a couple of filters and a set of macro bellows for $150 delivered.

One from this morning, no idea what it is though.

Man that's cool. Here are my lunchtime attempts at capturing some of the aphid activity in my garden. The flash shots didn't look too good so these are without. I'll try with an external flash later.

I like this composition but wish the ant was entirely in the DOF.

These are 1:1 Macro with Vivitar 100mm F2/8.
Manual focus, no tripod.

It's not that difficult to do and with the macro flash it should be a lot easier.

With these and other photos what distance are these taken at?
They look as though you right on top of em

cheers

Probably around 3 inches or so away, remember .. there is no cropping at all on those pictures. Apart from a bit of processing in Lightroom that is how they came out of the camera.

Also had my 1.4X Tamron Teleconverter attached as well.

These are cropped by about 30%.

Nice snail!

The following are the best of a fair number I took this afternoon. And the last for today. This cute-looking fly turned his back to me. It's about a 50% crop.

Getting frustrated I tried the Sigma 70-300mm. This fly is a 1/3 crop from a 190mm image. Well, the lens says 200mm but the file says 190mm. Odd.

Then I got lucky and a butterfly flew in, stopped for a couple seconds, flew around my head taunting me, and stopped for maybe 6 seconds, long enough for me to get this at 300mm. My best butterfly shot ever, since normally the exposure is off and the wing texture goes to white. I think I had adjusted this down 1EV.

I think I may be getting better, but only through taking a lot of wasted frames. These are all sharp enough for screen but I am not sure about print.

Insects seem to have a habit of turning their back on you, I got this one today, went to the side for a shot and he buzzed off.

The nice thing about digital though is that you can waste as many frames as you want .. unlike film.
I must discard around 80% of my shots.

I noticed in a previous post you are off to Dorset soon, before I moved to Spain 8 months ago I lived in Bournemouth
