I guess the screw-drive is not the best thing if you try to be stealthy. It is great for startling the CaNicon shooters however, they hear that thing rip and they get all confused

I like the noise! Not too loud though; it tells me the A focus is working and I don't have to check too closely in most cases that I'm in focus. I have a Bigma (Sigma) 150-500 with internal drive that is so quiet that I spend all my time double & triple checking to see if it is actually working. Before the turn of the Century I had to do all this focusing myself (lot of work!). .

I believe the noise actually comes from the body. You might hear it from the lens because it reverberates down the focusing mechanism in the lens - at least that's what I thought.
The lens definitely plays a role . My FA31 is pretty quiet but the DA 50 is really loud.

True. I guess lens body material makes a difference. Don't have the 50/1.8 anymore but still have the 35/2.4, both are quote louder even against the 18-55 kit.

Don't get the DFA 100mm macro or 35mm macro both are loud due to their long focus throws.
